Cesarean With Twins At 38 weeks and 4 days?

Because of myhospitalsprotocol, delivering babies at 37 weeks is not allowed. And because of how they schedule the cesareans, the earliest I can get in after I go past 37 is when I'm 38 weeks and 4 days. But from what I've been reading that's really late for twins to come out. The risk for placenta depletion goes way up. So when I told my high risk doctor (Who has a separate practice but advises my main doctors) he said I shouldn't be going beyond the 38 week mark. And He told them that but hospital rules trump doctors notes I guess. Has anyone run into this problem? I don't know what to do. I have weekly nst'sand the babies are healthy every time i go. They have been ingood health throughout this whole pregnancy. But I can't shake the feeling that something may happen if I go that far with them. I'm currently 36 weeks and 2 days pregnant.

Are you mo/mo, mono/di or di/di? I'm mono/di and my doctor has me scheduled for a c section at 36 +4. If there's no shared placenta, no signs of TTTS or IUGR you should be able to go longer than 36 weeks. But that's just my understanding, talk to your OB. They should be the ones scheduling you anyways.

  • I'm di di . I wanted to atleast get to 37 weeks for their safety (lung development etc) but going past 38 is dangerous. Atleast from what my other dr said. I keep getting different answers from my doctors this is what pisses me off. Thanks for answering

I'm scheduled for my c section at 38w2d for my di/di twins. I have heard of people going up to 39 weeks but as PP stated, I'd be double checking with the high risk OB.

  • Also---from what I've heard, placental depletion isn't a huge risk with di/di twins but again, I'm not an OB.

  • If it helps you worry less, my friend had di/di twins at 39 weeks 5 days. She went into labor naturally and delivered them both vaginally with no meds. Stay positive and keep asking questions!

Seriously though, anyone who can go that long with twins and deliver med free is some kind of super woman. This twin business is not easy!!
  • I'm a twin who was born in 1982 and I was born at around 40 weeks with a vaginal delivery. Not sure if it helps but we were born fine. I can't imagine waiting til 38 weeks being too bad.

@chris&haley & @blsav23, she is seriously the toughest woman I have ever met. When I complain I remember I could be having two (6 and 7 pounds respectively.) Crazy!
  • Y'all don't understand how much your answers put me at ease! Just being able to discuss it with other Preggo ladies is like a breath of fresh air. Thank you ladies <3
  • My hospital was the same... scheduled me at 38 weeks... I was a little put off bc I didn't think it was realistic bc I think im goin to go sooner but now I'm in the hospital until the boys are born due to preeclampsia.... I have had a wonderful pregnancy so far and all of a sudden at one reg ob appt I had high blood pressure got sent in to the hospital to check blood ect they wanted to watch me for 24 hrs and now I'm in for the long haul..... They said they will now deliver me at 36 wks I'm opting for a c section bc I only have one kidney and baby b has turned sooooo many times throughout this pregnancy I just want them both out safe and sound I am currently 35 weeks 1 day so they may be here by next weekend or im thinking maybe Monday....they are still taking it day by day... Watching my levels and bp... Ect...I'm di/di and they are both head down but who knows that could change tonight lol... If u can make it to 38 weeks that's great the longer the better their lungs are but 38 weeks should b max in my option... You will be good though I'm sure they wouldn't put you In any danger but we also have to advocate for ourselves bc our bodies will always tell us more then a dct may know.... Not one of us is the same and I think they sometimes forget that! Best of luck sweetie! You will b great!
