Having trouble giving 2 month old Zantac

Is anyone else having this problem? My son makes this awful face and then spits out the medicine. I have been using the syringe like thing that came with the medicine. In the past when I have given him gripe water he would choke, so we started using a small bottle that came with a first aid kit which is meant for dispensing medicine. He does fine with the gripe water using this small bottle but he spits up the Zantac when I tried using that bottle with him.

Also, it is supposed to be given twice daily but I can't figure out a good time to give it to him between feeding because he spits up and I don't want him to spit up the medicine.

Thanks for the help.

  • I put ours in the fridge, not sure that it helps but I read somewhere that sometimes kids will drink it better cold. Also I put the syringe in the side of their mouth and just push a little at a time, alternating sides and not taking the syringe out until they are done taking the medicine, that way they have to swallow it and can't push it back out :). My boys still spit out a little bit but they get most of it. It's hard!! I also read somewhere that somebody's pharmacy made their Zantac grape flavor. The generic we got is minty smelling so I don't know if they could change the flavor but maybe worth an ask.

  • I used to have the bottle nipple detached from the bottle. I'd have formula/breast milk already in the bottle, just no nipple/cap on it. Stick the nipple in his mouth, squirt the medicine in the nipple, then pour a bit of formula right on top of it. He'd suck it right now, then give me a dirty look for tricking him into taking his medicine. I'd then put the nipple on the bottle and continue feeding.

I also alternated bottle and medicine. Squirt a little of the medicine in his mouth and stick the bottle in quickly so he wouldn't spit the medicine out. Let him get a bit of formula before pulling the bottle out, squirting a little more medicine in his mouth, and sticking the bottle back in. He'd open his mouth for the bottle so this worked pretty well.

Eventually, he will get used to taking the medicine and it'll be NBD. Just get as much as you can into him for now, any little bit will help.

  • It tastes terrible.  I tried DS', and it was like mouthwash.  We stopped giving it to him after two days with our doc's blessing, but before we gave up, we did check with our pharmacy, and they'll do the grape flavor like PP mentioned.  Check on that.
  • I put my pinky in my daughters mouth and let her suck on it while I squirt the medicine in the side. She gives me a mean look but sucks it down mostly..only a small amount gets out the corners and she definitely doesn't have the pain with the reflux anymore so she's getting enough of it.
  • I mixed it with a splash of gripe water.
  • Thanks everyone for all the ideas!
