Really painful letdown...advice please

Im breastfeeding my 5 week old and my letdown is so incredibly painful. My left side always has a ton of milk and comes out fast. My right side is normal. With my daughter, my letdown was never this painful. The lactation consultant told me to pump a few minutes before I feed him but it doesn't help. When I pump to store milk or if baby eats a long time, my letdown is even more painful. It's terrible like stop what your doing, contraction in my boob painful. Any advice?

  • I have a very painful/forceful letdown. I will latch babe and as soon as I feel my letdown begin, I unlatch and letdown into a burp cloth. It makes it less painful as baby isn't sucking during letdown.

  • @breezymeema7 what about when your not nursing? I have a letdown literally every hour. It's so painful I want to cry.
  • I don't have any advice sorry, but it does sound awful! I'm sure it's one of those things that will resolve as your milk supply regulates.

Is the pain in the left side only? Could it be hyper lactation? https://www.babycenter.com/0_hyperlactation-overabundant-milk-supply_8488.bc

I can only suggest seeing an LC for help, and dosing up on BFing safe painkillers for comfort in the meantime. I hope it resolves itself soon. As someone who has experienced a lot of chronic pain during my breastfeeding career, I do feel for you!!
  • I had a painful letdown (not unbearable but I would wince and shut my eyes) and I also had a bit of an oversupply, but I noticed it (and the oversupply) is calming down a bit. Hopefully that is the case for you!
  • I have this too! I never even felt letdown with DD1 although I know it was quite forceful because she had choking/coughing issues. This time around - feels like electric shocks! And strangely I don't feel it on the side LO is nursing on, I only feel it in the other side and when she's not nursing :( it hurts so bad... I am really hoping this does down as time passes/supply regulates...4wks pp and it hasn't diminished at all.

@Lilyzmom yes! I letdown all the time and to the point of tears. You probably have an oversupply, I do, but it should regulate itself in a month or so. There certainly isn't any harm in seeing a LC if it persists though. As weird/mean as it sounds I try not to think about baby when I'm out as I find it triggers a letdown.
