Induce or c section?

saw my OB yesterday for the first time ( I've been seeing my GP till now). Same OB who delivered DD. both Drs have been saying c section all along but yesterday OB says I can be induced instead around 37-38 weeks due to DD being a tiny hippo and having several other issues during delivery. If I want I can wait till 39 weeks and have a c section instead since she agreed with me that DD's birth was terrible. I have never done either option, I went on my own with DDbut I was told that's not happening this time. Part of my indecisiveness is because I'm currently self employed, waiting on a new job to start so I can be employed and get mat leave, otherwise I can't afford to be off for more than maybe a month, barely enough time to heal. So do I induce, which is an easier recovery or wait for c section in the hopes I can get started at my new job and get mat leave?

Re: Induce or c section?

  • The fact that you think inducing is an easier recovery leads me to believe you need to do your research. That is not necessarily true. Talk to your doctor about it, google it, talk to women who have been induced. There's a board a little further down and plenty of women gave their experiences there.

  • I was induced with my first son & let me tell you it was not a walk in the park. Recovery can be just as long as a C-Section.
As PP's have said you really ought to be asking your OB questions. Just because it's a big baby doesn't automatically mean you need a section or need to be induced.
Is there a medical reason to be induced early?
  • DD was a large baby, there are already concerns this one will be bigger. DD was turned twice and kept flipping back, she got stuck aftern2.5 hrs of pushing and was pulled out by 2 OBs, no time for episiotomy or other intervention. She came out blue, limp and not breathing and was put on oxygen with NICU standing by in case they needed to take her. She had one shoulder dislocated due to her size and is lucky there was no brain damage. I laboured for 30 hrs with her, was also not dilating and was on oxytocin for the majority of the time which did not help. All along I've been told c section was my best option and what was recommended until yesterday when the OB told me I could induce early. I have not researched inducing yet but I plan to. Neither option is easy, that was a bad word choice but I feel based on my options at this point, inducing is an easier recovery than a c section.
  • I would choose induction over a c-section personally, though I have had 2 relatively easy inductions with no longer of a recovery time then someone who wasn't induced.
  • I would choose induction over c section. I've been induced twice out of 3 babies and it wasn't any worse of a labor for me. Even if it ended up in a c section I would feel better knowing that I had tried something else before major surgery.

That being said, I think you should wait until farther along and have more potential growth information before making a decision, even though geowth scans can be pretty inaccurate, because your baby could end up being smaller then you think. Plus all births are different so even if your baby is as big, it does not mean you will have the same problems.
  • I may have a similar decision to make for similar reasons to OP, however my choices would be to schedule a c-section at 39 weeks or to induce at 40 weeks.
OP, will they let you go further along and induce at 39 or 40 weeks instead? I get the fear of complications birthing a big baby, but inducing and c-section are both options best avoided if at all possible (plus inducing can increase your chances of needing an emergency c-section).
  • No they won't let me induce after 38 unless baby is small but that's not very likely. They also won't let me go on my own either, these are my options
  • No they won't let me induce after 38 unless baby is small but that's not very likely. They also won't let me go on my own either, these are my options

That's a bad situation to be in.
If I personally have to make this choice (I'll find out at 36 weeks) I'm leaning towards induction rather than c-section. Although I'm hoping to avoid both, the recovery from a vaginal birth is usually preferable to a c-section recovery.
Good luck with your decision, OP.
  • If those are your only two options, I would personally choose induction over c-section. But that is only bc of my personal experience - I was induced at 40w+3d because my water broke and labor never started, but recovery was no big deal. Hell, it was even shorter than those who were not induced. Still seems weird that those are your only two options but if it were me, I would choose induction hands down.
  • That is such a tough decision. I can see from your previous birth why you are worried. What would happen if you go into labor on your own? I honestly would lean more towards the caection just because it gives baby more time to grow.
  • I had an emergency c-section and i personally loved my c-section and recovery was not as bad as I had thought It would be. If it takes baby closer to your due date without any risk I'd go with the section, but that's just me.

IV heard that with being induced you still have a chance of needing a c-section, but that's something I would have to do more research on if I was in this position.
Ask your dr any questions you may have and do your own research, every experience is different. Good luck :)
  • How bad is the scar, really? I have a very narrow pelvic canal and am nervous I will have to have a C. My mother had to have one for all of us.

For our moms, if the first baby needed c section, they did it for the other babies too, at least thats what 2 of them told me. Her first baby was breech and the second would have been fine, but they were close in age. I guess it depends on a lot of things

It's not bad at all as long as they are in the correct position which they likely would be. Mine is maybe 4 or 5 inches long and fingernail thick. It's right where my underwear sits which is annoying during healing but is nice to not have to see 24/7!

It's not bad at all. It's like a bikini line incision so it's pretty low right above the bone, I have a weird body type so the way mine is, is right below or at my underwear line, I'm also pretty pale so if people were to see it, it is a little more noticeable but it fades as it heals.

Won't let you? It's your body and your decision! I understand being worried from your previous experience but I would do you research and make your own decision. Even if I was told I was having a big baby that wouldn't scare me, women have big babies vaginally all the time and the only way to determine if baby will "fit" is after you've been laboring and the relaxin is at its highest helping open you. There is no way to determine how "open" a women will get until she has been in THAT labor.

If I still had to choose I would induce even if it could lead to a c sect. Laboring does so many good things for baby and it is a better option that just going in for surgery.
  • I had a 8 lb 6.5 ounce baby girl and it was awful, she was facing towards my spine so I had horrible back labour, and she ended up getting stuck, I tore and had an episiotomy and when she was finally out she was on oxygen for an hour. My second was 8.1 lbs and she came out perfectly fine. I was personally nervous but the dr's were not concerned and never optioned inducing or c section unless it was needed on d day... Every delivery is different so I'm not sure why they would be jumping on not even giving a vaginal birth option...

Unless you have rickets or another disease that impacts your anatomy, it's been documented to be extremely rare that your body will produce a baby you cannot physically deliver vaginally.

Compared to the stretch marks, the CS scar is nothing. Mine is very low and thin. Even the itsy bitsy thongs from VS cover it without a problem.
I would be more concerned about the possible complications from surgery or with subsiquent pregnancies then I would be about the scar. (I know lots of women have no complications and additional pregnancies with out a problem, but a CS does increase your risk)

  • DS was 9lb and this LO has been pacing ahead of where he was. My OB wants to monitor since I have a small frame, but we both agree that everything should be fine. I just grow them big! I was 9lb at birth myself and am now only 5'3" (110lb pre pregnancy). Labor and delivery with DS was fine and I only had a level 2 tear. I've met known women having smaller babies with a greater deal of complications so you really can't go by size alone.
  • Even if you had a big baby with shoulder dystocia in the past, there is NO indication for an induction prior to 39 weeks.

I understand the fear of having another shoulder dystocia and complications with this pregnancy. I think it is reasonable to either go for an induction at or after 39 weeks or a cesarean section.

I would probably wait until closer to 39 weeks to decide. I would want to get an estimated weight prior to delivery. If this baby is estimated to be smaller than the first, I would probably opt for an induction at 39 weeks. If the baby is larger, I may mean towards a c section.

    Good luck!

  • I don't understand your saying that the doctor won't let you go on your own. How can he/she dictate that? It is your body. I'm not buying it. They don't have the right to make those medical decisions for you. Even if those are the only options that your doc is recommending that doesn't mean that you can't choose a different route. Again, it is YOUR body. Just saying.
  • That's what she said and I'm not arguing with it. I know what I went thru and there is a reason she is recommending these options. She has a medical degree, not me, and if she is recommending these options as best for the baby that is what I'm going to do.
  • I would chose the C section to give the baby that extra week in the womb. Every day is so important! Good luck!
  • I myself must be induced due to being high risk. If I were given an option of induction or c section I would still choose induction. My sister has been induced with all three of her children and it went very well. Also 37-40 weeks for a baby is considered full term and babys tend to due just fine from 37 weeks on.
  • I've had two previous c-sections and will be scheduling this one in just a couple of weeks! I absolutely love c-sections! With my first I didn't have any trouble at all. With my second the only trouble I had was the anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetist had to poke me at least 8 times to get my spinal in... I will be requesting I don't get them again this time! Easy recovery and you can almost not even see my scar! After it was healed it was maybe a tone lighter than the surrounding skin and about 2in long! I had to have a c-section with my first due to him getting stuck in my birth canal. My doc had said from my first visit he thought I would need a c-section, but he let me try on my own first. He got stuck, heart rate was dipping, and he had meconium, so I had to do the c-section! I wouldn't change it for the world! Maybe my doctor is just awesome, but I had a great two experiences, praying for a good third (and final) experience this time!
