Endometriosis and Labor

I and a FTM and am currently 28 weeks along. As the day approaches, I've been wondering what labor will be like. I have suffered with endometriosis for over a decade now and have experienced excruciating pain because of it. My menstral cramps would be unbearable. I could not keep food or liquids down, having to be taken to the ER twice because of it. The uterine contractions were always in my back, I wouldn't be able to move and have blacked out once becuse of the pain. I've been told that labor contractions and pain are a lot like severe menstral cramps. My Mom and my Grandma both said labor was less or just as painful as some of the periods they've had. Is there anyone else who has dealt with this? I know I won't know until the time comes, I just want to have a realistic expectation when it does. More than anything I just can't wait to meet my little girl!

Re: Endometriosis and Labor

  • My friend has endometriosis as well and delivered 5 babies vaginally. Pain medication while you're in labor is always an option. Good luck!

  • I've had the very severe cramps that you talk about. I found labor to be similar and even a little less extreme than my very worst periods. I definitely wouldn't worry about it being worse than what you've already experienced.
  • I had severe endometriosis pain as a 20 soemthing which has improved with age and weight loss. I didn't think labor was that much worse than my worst menstral pains- but to me it felt more like gastric type pain to start with. I had twins at 23 weeks with no pain meds. They may have been small, but there were two of them and one came breech on her back, not her butt. Time will tell if a full term birth is worse or not. Other friends who have been through similar situations and had natural full term births labor tell me labor is labor. I don't know if that's true or not.
  • I had awful periods and cramps. Labor felt pretty much like that. Except it was like "ouch that hurts" for one minute with 2-3 minutes of a break in between. It was not worse than my worst period cramps, lasted 18 hrs and I got a baby at the end.
  • I have endometriosis as well and I did have back labor, but I think they were unrelated. Contractions were not at all like my menstrual cramps, which usually have me curled in the fetal position on the floor.

  • I have struggled with endometriosis since I was 20 years old and I have been wondering the same thing recently. I have talked to my doctor and he assured me that only time will tell and I always have an options for pain medicine. I have had multiple doctors also tell me that I would most likely not conceive on my own due to the extreme endometriosis I have. I have come to deal with the fact that only time will tell and I remind my myself daily that I am beyond blessed to have conceived this child since my husband and I have been trying for over 5 years naturally. We actually found out I was pregnant on our own 2 weeks before we had an appointment with a fertility specialist.

I wish you the best of luck!!
