Protein in Urine

I just hit 30 weeks today and had my routine urinalysis done during my OB check this morning. My BP was normal and I'm not experiencing any swelling anywhere but my OB mentioned there were traces of protein in my urine which concerned her a little. I don't know what it could be - I have other things going on with my pregnancy unrelated to the protein found but she didn't quite explain the protein piece (my fault for also not asking). Ahh!

  • I went in for a check-in appt today for GD with the Diabetes Center that manages that aspect of my pregnancy. They always do a urinalysis and today they said I had a trace amount of protein which they said was, "perfectly normal". Not sure how much stock to put in that as this center is run by educators and dietitians, not nurses... So I didn't ask any questions. I have an appointment and ultrasound next week because I was measuring almost 34 weeks at 30 weeks... So I'm planning on waiting until then to ask about the protein. I've not had any other pre-e symptoms, and I check my BP regularly. Keep us posted if you call for more information! I will do the same after my appointment.
  • I was under the impression that traces of protein in urine mean risk of GD? But maybe I'm wrong.
  • I'm not sure because I didn't ask either (wasn't the focus of the visit), but I just got home from the ER and I had protein in urine also. I figure if they mention it, it's probably not really a good thing but I have no idea.

Does your OB know you were in the ER?

  • I had protein in my urine my entire pregnancy with my daughter, blood pressure was always normal and no swelling in feet only slight swelling in hands from pregnancy related carpal tunnel. I did not have GD and did not have sugar in my urine. They were never concerned. This pregnancy, I have protein in my urine again. Blood pressure still fine and slight swelling that I'll mention next week at my appointment. OB was not worried.
From what I know, if you have protein in your urine and have high blood pressure and swelling it can be a sign of pre-eclampsia. BUT protein alone does NOT mean that. You also need the high blood pressure and swelling. ( I'm in Canada, no idea if it's different in the US or UK).
  • I'm not sure if you're asking for advice or just letting us know about your urine.. But I'm going to go with the first. If I were you and I was unclear of what the doctor meant and I didn't ask any questions, I'd probably call back in the morning and just ask for clarification. I'm sure the doctor or their nurses wouldn't mind explaining.

I want to love this 10x.
  • I had trace protein in my urine one appointment and not the next. Just try not to worry if you done have any other symptoms
  • It's a sign of possible pre eclampsia. watch out for swelling and high BP. It can be serious if not monitored. This is why we always pee in cup each appointment. Just give your dr call and see what he wants you to monitor and if he wants you to come in if extra swelling occurs. He might want you to monitor bp at home if you continue to have protein in urine. Never be afraid to call your ob back about questions.
  • If your Dr wasn't concerned, don't stress about it either. Extra protein could be simply because your dehydrated, keep drinking that water!
  • Watch for sudden swelling and keep a log of your BP, that along with protein can be a sign of pre-eclampsia, had it with my first. But protein alone I would not stress to much over but be sure to keep track of unnormal symptoms.
  • Protein has to reach a certain threshold to be clinically significant for pre-e in combination of bp over 140/90. You could get bp cuff at drug store to self monitor a bit. If they get concerned for pre-e, you'll have to do 24 hour urine collection for analysis. I wouldn't worry too much yet....just something to watch is all.
  • I've had trace protein in my urine on and off during this pregnancy and my midwife isn't worried at all. As others have suggested, I'd follow up with your OB. I'm not sure why she wouldn't have explained further since she was concerned. Good luck!
