Sleep schedule?

My LO is one month old and his sleep schedule is in the middle of a change. How often and for how long do your little ones sleep during the daytime? Mine cries a lot when awake and is staying awake more often. Possibly colic. He's finally learning to take a pacifier so that helps with awake time, but I'm struggling with how much he should be awake during the day. He usually eats, sleeps for an hour or two and then wakes to be fed again, with sporadic play times in there. Yesterday was off though. He was up for most of the day fussing. Is that a growth spurt?how often should he be awake?

Re: Sleep schedule?

  • A typical newborn wake time is between 45-60 min. This will get longer as the baby gets older. We do a feed, wake, sleep schedule. So he eats, then has wake time, then nap time. The wake time counts your feeding time also. My son is typically awake for 90 min, counting feeding time. We do a 3 hour schedule. So awake 90, sleep 90, then feed again. Anyways, that's just an example for you. Hope it makes sense.

  • My LO has a crazy schedule or lack there of. He eats every 4-4.5 hours at night and goes immediately back to sleep but, when he wakes up around 9am, he stays up through 2 feedings (normally until 1 or 2pm). He normally takes a long afternoon nap from 2-5pm. Then he goes through the 3 hour eat, play, sleep cycle until bedtime.
  • We don't have a set schedule yet, but loosely follow the feed, awake sleep during the day every 2-3 hours and at night is every four hours with no play time after feed. Once we hit one month old I plan on really sleep training her.

  • We get up at 9ish and feed. We are back down within the hour. She only sleeps for 30 mins. We continue this all day. Around 3 we get in bed together and she'll sleep maybe two hours. Then we get up and feed and she naps on and off til bed time. Bedtime is 10-11. She then gives us 4-5 hour stretches. She's a month old. Sure wish her naps would even out. Lol

  • There is no real "normal" with newborns. :) My 3.5 week old right now generally takes 3 naps a day. She is up around 7:30 or 8ish then up for a hour or two, sleeps for an hour or so, up for an hour or so, takes a solid 3 hour nap mid-day most days, then up for an hour or so, down for an hour or so, up for an hour or so, and then bedtime is usually around 7:00. She wakes every 3 hours overnight usually and really enjoys being up from around 4 to 6am :P  I have a toddler, so I'm not focusing on trying to get any sort of schedule right now, too crazy. She has just done this on her own. Fortunately she falls asleep pretty easily when she needs to (except between 4 and 6 am...), so she just does her thing and has pretty much put herself on the 3 nap routine. My older daughter was on 3 naps till 8 months old, so who knows, maybe this will be a consistent thing for a while...

Do we have the same baby...?!
  • We have Tanner on a really good schedule that works for us. He wakes up usually around 1-2 am then goes to sleep until 6am then goes back to sleep until 9 am. Then usually sleeps most the day with little feeding in between. Them around 5-6 pm he wakes up until 10 pm. Then he goes to bed and sleeps really well. Usually when he is awake he is awake for about 40 mins. We also do tummy time during those times.
  • A friend of mine who is on her 4th child told me to remember these numbers:3636. She said at 3weeks, 6weeks, 3months, 6months is when we should expect our baby to be fussy because that is when they grow the most.
  • @andreaj33 I'm having the same issue with my LO. He is up for sometimes 6 hours straight during the day, sometimes more! Idk how he isn't exhausted bc I am lol. He sleeps well at night wakes up twice I feed & change him and he goes right back to sleep. The only time he sleeps for an hour or two during the day is if we go for a car ride. Any suggestions anyone???
  • My LO is 3 weeks 3 days and has a slightly discernable schedule. Up 3 times or so at night, especially 3 am seems to be magical time for her, and sleeps for long stretches during the day. A car ride definitely puts her to sleep and if extra time is needed for mommy or daddy we put her in her rocker swing which can lengthen her nap time.

    This is us too :-)
  • @Saratiff what method do you use to sleep train?

  • DS is 12 days old and has no sleep schedule in my perspective. He will fall asleep after feeding, in arms but after we lay him down he typically wakes up within a half hour. At night he is waking practically every 1.5-2.5 hrs. Not giving mom & dad much of a sleep. I really want him to sleep in his crib or pack n play nightly and at
    naps. Any suggestions?

I am not interested in any attempt to *sleep train* my newborn (I don't even think that's possible TBH). As of now, she is calling the shots and that's totally normal. She is currently waking every 2ish hours to eat and be changed. She stays awake between 2am-5am pretty fussy. Around 6ish weeks is when DS sleep schedule began regulating so that's kind of what I'm expecting with DD. hang in there OP!

This is my rationale too. He eats and sleeps as necessary. We aren't trying to form any type of schedule for him yet.

DS is almost 3 weeks and wakes every two hours on the dot to eat. I feel your pain! Hang in there. My first did this and I feel like it got better after the 3 week growth spurt. At least we got 3-4 hour stretches at night! We have found that this one sleeps more soundly swaddled. I also have DH once a night stretch a feeding to three hours if he can by rocking DS and using the pacifier, this helps me A LOT. He also takes DS in the morning a lot so I can get an extra hour or two of sleep after the 7am feeding.

  • Be basically do eat-play-sleep but I really just follow LOs cues. My baby is very fussy during awake time too. I think she has reflux so I'm hoping the doctor gives us Zantac this week and I'm hoping that helps. Anyway the length of her awake and sleep times is completely up to her at this point. She falls asleep when she's tired and wakes up when she's hungry. It works for us for now.

This exactly. DS is 6 weeks on Wednesday and goes down around 10:30 pm....wakes every two hours on the nose thru the night to eat. During the day I get a few half hour MAYBE hour long naps from him if I'm lucky. @CaliforniaDream87 I hope your 6 week theory applies to my LO.....Mama is exhausta-tired!!! ;)

  • We do not have a set schedule and IMO our lo's are much too young to start sleep training. We follow her cues, nurse her when she is hungry (usually 2-3 hours during the day 5-6 at night) rock her and change her diaper when she cries. Have her sleep when she is tired. At this point it is just survival and eat sleep and poop. We are pretty busy with a 4.5 year old as well so this baby just goes with the flow whatever we need to do she just comes along and will sleep or eat wherever we are.

  • My LO is about two and a half weeks and likes sleeping all day and partying all night. Used to she would eat pretty well and go back to sleep but lately she'll fall asleep halfway through a bottle. She's also become a lot more fidgety in her sleep. Gonna be interesting to see what the next few weeks brings.
