Is everyone working until their due date or just trying to work as long as they can? Im currently a nanny for a 7 month boy and it's starting to get hard but going to push as long as I can through. Just wanted to see what everyone else was doing.

  • I am a SAHM now, but I worked up until delivery for both of my boys. For my first that was one week past my due date and for my second I had a scheduled csection that was one day before my due date. Honestly I am glad I did. I only got 8 weeks for my first and 12 for my second and I am glad I had the with my baby. Are you planning on returning to work after?

  • I will be working till I deliver or as long as possible. I won't get maternity leave so I need to save for rent three months in advance so I can have as much time as I need. Seeing as to my job lets you take as much time as you need off since they don't pay. This is my first and I just want to love all on him.
  • With my DD, I was planning to start maternity leave on my due date but ended up having my daughter 3 days before. This time around due date is a Friday so will probably have maternity leave start the following the Monday. If baby comes early obviously I plan to be working so just will have to wait and see!

  • I am working until I can't anymore, whether It is because I am in labor or the doctor tells me I have to stop. I am a high school teacher, I kind of hope my water breaks at school and I give the kids a story of a lifetime lol.
With my first my due date was 3 days after spring break and I decided that I wouldn't come back after spring break. Lucky me my water broke the first Saturday of spring break.
  • I will also work up until delivery. The majority of my maternity leave will be unpaid so the longer I can work the better.
  • @ kmo8986 I keep saying my water will break in the middle of one of my classes. I have high schoolers too!
  • Most women I know worked up until the end unless their doctor said otherwise...I'm in grad school (my final semester to be certified to teach, I'm a student teacher in an elementary school classroom all day every day as of today for the semester) and planned this pregnancy out so that I graduate mid-December and she's due 1.5 months later late-Jan, but I wasn't going to be working/in school during that time anyway, otherwise I'd have kept going until I couldn't. Just think of it as training for when you're caring for your baby while pregnant with the next one, lol.

  • I understand your pain, I nanny a 6 year old, 4 year old, 2 year old, and 2 month old. They are a handful and I'm exhausted. I'll work until Christmas and then see if I'm still up for that chaos or not (due 1/8). As challenging as it has been I just view it as preparation.
  • Worked til day I delivered. With my first it was during me working months of overtime and worked at least 60 hours a week for last few months. With second same thing worked overtime during my busy months when I needed to but was only working 40 hours a week during the month when he was born.
  • I have no expectations being a first time mom. I am just going to try and work as long as I can. Probably until mid December (due jan 3) I don't know how it's going to go though. I have major hip pain and a very physical job so we will see. It might be different if I had a job where I could sit more.

  • I plan to work to delivery, but am pregnant with twins so we will see how things go.

  • I plan to work as long as I can. I imagine that since this is my first I will probably go a little late. I will set my due date as my last day of work because, as a therapist, I can't just disappear on my clients, so there needs to be a clear end date. Setting it as my due date might be pushing it. It's just so hard to predict how it will go, and I really need to be able to pay my mortgage!
  • I'm planning on working up until a week before my due date.  I will have plenty of vacation time built up by that time.

  • I'm working until the day I deliver. I work 10-13 hour days right now. But once I hit 28 weeks I am only allowed to work 8 hours a day, including PT...because Army. Ha
  • I am working until my scheduled date. I made it to my due date last time and they wouldn't let me work past that even though DS didn't show up until nearly 2 weeks later.
  • I would rather work up till delivery day, however my job gives u one month off before baby comes (use it or lose it), I'd rather have the extra time with baby, but their rules. Man, the US sucks for maternity leave in general.
  • I live in California where the state allows you to take a month off before little one shows up, and it is time that you can't add on after the fact. Kind of a use it or lose it.

I was planning on working right up to my due date, but a lot of my friends are encouraging me to take the time.

    Still undecided I guess.
  • I plan on working up until I have the baby. My company shutdowns between Christmas and New Years, so at least I will already get that time off and then I only have one week to go after that, my due date is 1/11.
  • I will probably be at my desk until my water breaks

  • I worked until 36 weeks pregnant. We knew I would be a SAHM afterwards and decided to start early since it was a good transition time for my job too. It also helped out a lot because my husband spent months 3-8 of my pregnancy being unable to walk and drive because of a shattered ankle. He was finally able to walk by the time I quit working and we could actually shop and prep for baby, and enjoy time together.
Had our situation been different I probably would've worked up to my due date, especially if I had a certain amount of maternity leave. I'd want to maximize time with my baby.

  • I'm a high school teacher, and am due January 15, RIGHT at the end of our first semester. I'm wanting to work right up to my due date, but part of me is considering just going out for our two week winter break, and not returning (break ends on January 4th). We shall see what I ultimately decide!!
  • I am hoping to work until I go into labor. Even if I go past my due date I'll continue to work. So I am trying to take it easy and hope that I medically have no reason not to work. I already have some days that I'm slumped over in my chair and my heads resting on my desk and I'm almost asleep (no that's not acceptable, but my body is tired). If I had to go on bed rest that would shorten the time that I have with my baby before I go back to work.
  • Im planning to work up until christmas, maybe a week or two before, depending how i go. It will be stinking hot here when im due (jan 9). The last person who tried to push themselves too much during pregnancy in my workplace delivered at 24 weeks (yes, because she overdid it, not for other unknown reasons). I dont plan to follow in her footsteps, especially given my family history if premmie babies!
  • here in Canada we get 15 weeks sick leave before mat leave and 12 months of mat leave. I'm 22w3d I'll be off by 30 weeks probably
  • Ugh, so I *was* planning on probably working up until my due date, or at the very least, Christmas, but we just found out that the show I'm working on is going very, very badly, and there's a possibility of it getting canceled before we even air.  I just have my fingers crossed we'll at least limp along until Christmas break!  Feeling nervous today.  :/
  • I was planning on working until I go into labor but I was reading our maternity leave policy thru work and bc they are in California we get up to 4 weeks before the baby comes and 6-8 weeks of maternity leave depending on delivery and 6 weeks of parental time all paid. If I don't take the 4 weeks before birth I can't add it on to the end to use with the baby. So I will probably use that 4 weeks prior to birth to get last minute things done and I'm sure I'll be completely miserable and will not want to be working anyways.

I am also a therapist so I plan to spend the last month transitioning clients for either discharge or to another therapist. I'm due January 20th and I have my last day set for January 15th.
  • @khf221979 I'm in CA too and I did not know that!  That's awesome to know.  I'll probably stop working at Christmas then and take those four weeks.  Thanks for sharing that info!

This is paid at 55% disability though, isn't it? I feel like I would be throwing away money if I'm still feeling up to working.
  • I will be working right up till the day I deliver I work in collections so mostly sitting which is starting to become uncomfortable
  • I'm a stay at home mom but with my first I start my maternity leave a week before my due date and she ended up being 9 days late

I plan to have a colleague covering my clients for me for 6 weeks, and then returning to see clients. I'm going to take another 6 weeks off of my managerial responsibilities after returning to clients. I think I will try to see everyone for the last time on 1/11-1/13, and then start the wait for babe. Most of my clients are stable and high functioning, so some might not want/need to see my colleague while I'm out. How long do you plan to be out of work?
  • I am planning on working all the way up until I am ready to go to hospital/in labor.  I am a teacher and we don't technically get paid leave but I have accumulated enough sick days and other leave to cover most if not all of my maternity leave (depending on how long I take).  I have heard of many first time moms having the baby well past their due date...I don't want to waste a single day "waiting at home" if I can help it.  Luckily, I am due on the 6th of January and will have 2 weeks of winter break beforehand to wait for him to come/relax/be comfy.  If he does come late, one of my biggest fears is my water breaking at school...but I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that!

I work remotely to my firm from a different state so I'd love to work until baby arrives. Just watched a PBS special last week on how terrible maternity leave laws (or lack thereof) are in the U.S. - and how California companies are saying they even make sense economically (I am East Coast). Was super interesting. Sadly even when paid leave is offered by private companies, lots of women feel guilty / pressure not to take all of that time. Kind of like the new Hyundai commercial tag line "remember when leaving your job on time wasn't an act of courage" or something like that.
