Oversupply and Letdown

Any of you ladies have an overactive letdown or an oversupply? My LO is 5 weeks and we are still having to work on our latch. Is it common to get a more shallow and lazy latch when you're engorged or in the middle of the night/morning? Every time I relatch her I still have discomfort. I have a suspicion that my oversupply may upset her stomach and cause her to spit up at times. Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Oversupply and Letdown

  • That makes a lot of sense... I have the same issue, and I try to express to help with that, but it doesn't always work.

  • Yep. Same issue here. LO is 7 weeks old. My LC suggested block feeding to decrease my supply and make sure LO is getting to the hind milk. I dedicate 3 hours to each breast. As often as she wants to nurse in 3 hours, I put her on the same side. Then next 3 hours, other side. As far as letdown goes, side laying feeding has helped with this because LO can let the extra milk dribble out during a letdown instead of the usual gagging or choking.
  • I second the side lying position. We get a lot less spit up that way. My LC also recommended pumping myself to basically empty after my first feeding every morning. It helps decrease some of the pressure so I don't have as much spraying, etc while she is trying to eat. I definitely noticed a decrease in spit ups after we did this.
  • Wish I could side lay but we lose the proper latch if we do.
  • I have the same issue. I try to pump before I feed DD otherwise she ends up choking to try and keep up. When that happens on her next feed she doesn't want to take the nipple as If she's scared it will happen again even though she is hungry. I'm getting over 4oz out of each breast before I even feed her, and she is putting on the recommended weight, and is happy and full. I now donate the breast milk to the maternity hospital for the premie babies. They provide you with an electric pump, maybe you could do that to help you LO as it works for us to clear the excess?
  • @meganpatel It doesn't make you more engorged. I'm afraid to pump for the fear of tricking my body into producing more milk. Im already having plugged duct or mastitis symptoms and it's hard for baby to empty the breast as it is. But maybe it'll relieve so pressure and dosc
  • I wait for the letdown and then pull baby off and spray the milk into a rag. Once the spray subsides I let baby relatch. This also allows me to see the color of the milk! I block feed but do it based on how full the other boob feels and if I see white milk (rather than clear watery foremilk) during the spray.
  • My baby's latch is terrible and I also had engorgement up until week 7. Week 8 now and finally engorgement has seemed to even out and way more comfortable. I've block fed and on demand fed entire time.
  • I often will wait for letdown and spray the extra milk in a burp cloth too. My lactation consultant also recommended feeding lying flat on my back which does help a lot especially at night or first thing in the morning when I have the most milk. It seems to slow the flow a lot. Sometimes, if we have a bad latch but not a painful latch, I will wait until the intense letdown has passed before I unlatch her and adjust.
  • Cabbage leaves to help decrease swelling really helps too. I block fed but not according to hours, according to feedings for example I'd feed 2-3 feedings on one breast until I felt it was completely drained then feed on other breast. Cabbage leaves to decrease swelling on that breast. Your body has to get the signal to quit producing more milk, and that happens by letting the breast become full. 7 weeks now and my supply has basically levelled off. LO mostly still only feeds off 1 breast at a time.
  • In addition to the other suggestions, I have started positioning my son in a more upright position when I feed him. He still spits up, but it's definitely less often and less volume.
  • @nataliemarie02 I do it as I was already having that wasted into the nursing pads or just soaking my clothes. For me personally it hasn't increased my supply, just allowed me me to collect and and help out. Even if you just skim off maybe an ounce it will help alleviate the pressure? Good luck :)
