Infertility

Anybody here took 100mg clomid but only have one egg?

Hi, I am new here and I did my second iui in August for male factor. My cycle was normal and I can ovulate on my own. But my re still put me on 50mg clomid last cycle and 100mg clomid this cycle. Both cycles I had only one big follicle. Anyone can tell me why I have only one egg on clomid? Aren't I supposed to have more as I can ovulate normally without clomid? What's wrong with me? Thanks! Hope everyone can see the BFP this month!

Re: Anybody here took 100mg clomid but only have one egg?

  • Hi.  While I haven't personally experienced it on Clomid, it is possible.  I was recently in a situation where my doc decided to switch me from Clomid to Letrozole just to change things up.  Letrozole is similar to Clomid but generally had fewer side affects, aside from some serious issues if you take it while pregnant, and can help women who have a poor lining on Clomid (according to my doc).  I didn't have any of those things, but they wanted to mix it up in case it was some issue they couldn't see.  On Clomid, I had a ton of mature eggs (3-5), on Letrozole I had one.  It could be just this cycle that's a fluke or it might be that Clomid is not the drug for you.  I would talk to your doctor to see if they would recommend continuing with Clomid or if you should try another drug.

Did they do a cycle without any drugs and you were producing mature follicles?  If you weren't, getting 1 mature one could be fine.  At the end of the day, you only need one good one.  It also makes the trigger shot less crampy, and you don't have to worry about multiples.

If this cycle doesn't work (fingers crossed it does!), I would ask your doc if it makes sense to stay on Clomid.

    Good luck!

  • Yes, this same thing happened to me! I even somehow had 2 mature follicles on a natural, monitored cycle, but still only had one on 100mg Clomid. And, it thinned my lining. My RE thinks it means a I have some sort of ovulatory disfunction, but honestly I don't see the logical leap. I still want to ask him next time I meet with him. I've only seen nurses since then. Basically, he told me he doesn't see oral meds working for me. I took last month off to get my mind straight. It was a real blow to the plans I had set out for my infertility journey and basically left me with probably only 2 maybe 3 more shots to get pregnant for financial purposes. I just started injectables Sunday, and had a fantastic ultrasound today. I'm actually a little worried they may need to cancel for overstimulation, but I'll find out more at an appointment tomorrow.

Anway, I'm sorry you are going through this and really hope your one works this cycle! Know that you definitely are not alone in this! I wondered myself if Femera would have worked better for me, but I was willing to give injectables a try since the chances are improved much more.

  • I have taken both Clomid and Letrozole and have only produced one large follicle each medicated cycle (total of 4). My RE says its normal.

  • @thelabyrinth Thank you for your reply. You are so lucky that have so many mature follicles. I would discuss with my RE if this cycle did not work.
  • @riveridgional @kmetcalfe77 Thank you so much for your reply. Did your RE explain to you why some people can have more mature follicles? I don't know whether it is related to hormones or ovarian reserves. My fsh is 9 and afc on day3 is 33.

I was so emotional when he told me my results and his feelings on possible ovulatory disfunction that I literally couldn't speak to ask any questions. I just remembered thinking how I wished my husband was there. We thought we already received the unexplained diagnosis, so bad news was a shock to me. I'm 30 and my AMH and FSH levels are in normal range ( I don't know the numbers). He told me based on my hormones, I had plenty of eggs and they are of good quality. We just need to figure out a way to get them out.

He just told me he was expecting me to have 3 or 4 mature follicles while I was on 100 mg clomid since I ovulate on my own and my hormones are normal. He also told me he had to think the egg I had that round is likely the highest quality I've had. Based on my progress this cycle, I'm thinking I will meet with him by Tuesday at the latest and will let you know if I find anything out in more detail.

  • @riveridgional I can really understand you. I am emotional too since I started iui. Best wish to you on your next round of iui.
  • @Sarah1516 no my RE didn't explain why other people have more follicles on Clomid but he did say that if this IUI didn't work then he wants to move on to injectibles next cycle to get more follicles.
@riveridgional if you don't mind me asking, does your insurance cover injectibles? If not, how much does it cost? My insurance does not cover any injectibles so I'm worried about the cost.
I think what my RE should worry more about is making sure the trigger shot worked and that I ovulated close to IUI. I'm worried that I didn't ovulate until 2 days after the IUI.

@kmetcalfe77 I don't mind at all. That's what we're all here for. I don't have insurance for any infertility costs, so I'm paying everything out of pocket. My doctor ordered mine from Freedom Pharmacy online. The total cost for the meds I've paid is $1,283.70 after a $120 mail-in rebate. I was told most people spend between $1100 and $1500 on medications. My doctor does a flat fee for OOP patients for all ultrasounds, bloodwork, and office visits. That ran us $1,215, but I'll definitely get my money's worth out of that! I've been responding very well, so I think I'll probably wind up with at least one full Gonal-F 300iu pen left (really 2 because my med shipment was delayed and my RE gave me a sample to hold me over). If I get pregnant this time around, I can't get a refund for them, but at least I can put my name on a list at my clinic in case anyone wants to buy it from me at a discounted rate. It was a little overwhelming to me at first (the cost and actually giving myself the injections), but I'm actually preferring them to Clomid. I've had no side effects. I just have a heavy feeling almost like I'm carrying two small water balloons in my stomach, but I thinks it's because I have so many follicles growing.

@kmetcalfe77 Oh yeah, just to give you a better idea, the amount I spent covers 900iu of Gonal-F RFF Redi-ject (3 of 300 each), 2 Ganirelix 250mcg/0.5ml, and 10,000iu of Pregnyl (trigger shot). They also gave me all the needles, alcohol swabs, gauze and disposal container for "free" and they ship the meds overnight (but no Sunday) delivery.

If you google Freedom Pharmacy, you can see their prices online. Though, if you have any sort of insurance coverage for the medications, I think they will charge you more.

@Sarah1516 My 1st round of clomid was 100mg (2 50mg pills a day) it produced 1 mature follie and a BFN.  For this month, my RE wanted to change it up so I would get better results.  I went to 1 pill a day (50mg) and added 4 follistim injections.  That produced 4 mature follies when I was ready for IUI.  I also ovulate fine and I'm very regular with an unexplained infertility.  For me, the injections helped a lot.

  • @babyexpress Thank you for sharing. Did your RE explain to you why there was only one mature follicles? I am afraid my hormones are not good enough. How is your day3 fsh and afc level if you don't mind?

Honestly, I can't remember.  I'm not sure my office does b/w on my u/s of CD2.  They do b/w on the day before my trigger shot, which was 471 for estrogen and 1.06 for progesterone.  If they did do it, I didn't ask the levels.  They just usually call me and say everything looks good.

My RE didn't explain why there was only 1 follie, but I think it is pretty normal.  My RE just wanted to be more aggressive this round so that my chances were higher.  In any case, I did not enjoy the 100mg of clomid at all.  My body did not like the symptoms.

  • @babyexpress thank you so much! I am on my 9 dpiui now. Want to wait a couple of days to do the hpt. FX for us! :)
  • I took clomid 100 mg this cycle with on,y one mature follicle. IUI today and tomorrow. Dr wasn't concerned about only one.
  • *BFP mentionned*
It's true it really only takes one. I had my IUI a little over 3 weeks ago with only 1 definitely mature follie (2 were at 15 the day before, not clear they would have made it). I was on Femara and Follistim, and had less mature follies on that combo than on Femara alone a few months prior. And that's when I got my BFP :) FX for you ladies!
  • @kidshrink thank you for the encourage. I am so happy for you! :)
  • @chuckers19 thank you for sharing. My RE didn't seem to be concerned either. But I am worried if this is because my hormones are not good.
