3rd Trimester

Getting induced on Saturday...any advice??

hi everyone, my last post was looked down upon pretty badly so hopefully I can get some advice/input here.

I'll be exactly 39 weeks on Saturday and am being induced due to high BP, low blood sugars, and excessive swelling.

I'm not really sure how to feel or what to feel, the entire pregnancy I've read posts and watched videos of what to expect during labor and delivery but now that it's finally here and it won't be natural labor, it's medically induced- I'm not really sure what to expect in terms of pain, timing, contractions, complications...

Anyone ever been induced before? Any comments/advice/anything you would have or not have done?

Who went with you to the hospital? Did you eat a meal before you went? How long was labor? Did you take and epidural? If so, at what point in labor did you get that?

Please feel free to give any other advice...

  • Google it or use the search function. You did a DD on your last post and were crappy to those that gave you advice.

  • Oh. You're the castor oil chick. I'll give my input anyways.

I was induced at 39 weeks with my first child. I was too nervous to eat before I was checked in at 6am and that is still my biggest regret. I wasn't able to eat for 18 hours and it was torture.

My husband and mom were with me. I checked in at 6am, was given Pitocin at 8am, doctor broke my water around 2pm and gave me an epidural at that point. I was fully dilated by about 9:30pm and ready to start pushing. I never once felt a real contraction because of the epidural but I could tell when I needed to push. I pushed for 3  hours which was exhausting and quite painful despite the epidural. After 3 hours of pushing and 17 total hours of labor, I had my 9 pound boy.

Every birth is different so put your trust in your doctor and the hospital staff. They will guide you.

  • Yeah, I'm a little put off by the fact that you DD'd your last post but I'll bite anyway.

I was induced with DD1 at 42 weeks.  I was given Cervadil at 10pm, checked in the am, was dilated to 1cm, put on pitocin, spent the majority of the day just hanging out.  Contractions didn't start getting painful until mid-afternoon and I was given an epidural.  A few hours later, I had made it to 3cm and they decided to break my water.  More time waiting, more checks, and then at 4am, made the decicion to have a c-section because I hadn't dilated past 3cm.  So total time spent being induced/laboring was 32 hours.

DH stayed with me the whole time, except for delivery.  When they made the initial cut, I could feel the sensation and they had to give me general anesthesia.  Woke up an hour after DD1 was born, cried that I missed her birth, went to the recovery room for snuggles and breastfeeding.
  • I am truly sorry about my reaction in the other post but you guys have no idea how much I appreciate your input. I'm so nervous right now, hubby just got called to Germany for an emergency business meeting and I'm here By myself. Hopefully he'll be back by this evening but can't really keep my hopes up.

I hope he gets back in time.

    Wishing you lots of luck!
  • My inductions were pretty good actually. I had one where they immediately broke my water and one where they started me with the gel. I preferred the gel first as I started contracting from it. Labours weren't all that painful. I played games with DH on my phone and just kind of chilled. When the contractions became more than I can bare I got the Epidural and it was lovely. I rested my body rested and I dialated like crazy. For my first I pushed for 30 minutes and for my second I pushed for 15 minutes and she was 10.5 lbs! A little weak in the knees afterwards but overall I had no problems. I ate before I went so make sure you do!

I hope he's back too. Good luck and TRY to relax tonight if you can.
  • You could also ask your midwife/OB about using a foley bulb first before pitocin or cervadil. If I have to be induced for any reason I will ask if we can go that route first.
