Irritable Uterus WTH?

First it was horrible SPD since late June that is only getting worse, even turning in bed is a nightmare and I have to mentally prepare myself for the pain. Now it's irritable uterus. I spent 10 hours in labor and delivery last night after my regular OB visit.I had been having water trickle down my legs several times a day and when she checked me, she definitely thought it was amniotic fluid (turns out it wasn't, just very watery discharge). So I was sent upstairs to get checked and when they connected me to the monitor, they noticed I was having contractions every 3-5 minutes. I had been feeling them frequently but they weren't extremely painful, only a few made me stop in my tracks, but I chalked it up to BH and didn't mention it(I really don't want to be that expectant mom that walks into L&D every day the last few weeks). They ended up keeping me several hours to check if i was dilating and that was a no go. Of course after all the poking and prodding I was left with more painful, frequent contractions and spotting. Contractions tend to come very strong when I really have to pee, after I pee, if the baby moves, if I walk more than 5 minutes, you name it, it makes it worse. Anyone else having this type of issue or have been diagnosed with irratable Uterus? I feel so frustrated this is my 3rd pregnancy, I have only gained 23 lbs, I exercised until around 5 months, then everything started to go way south!  It has been miserable and I thought I was doing everything right for a smooth ride. Ok, vent over :-(

Re: Irritable Uterus WTH?

  • I had was diagnosed with an irritable uterus during my 20-hour labor with DS. They didn't understand why I was getting no break (at all) from my back labor contractions. My midwife thought I was exaggerating the pain until she hooked me up to the monitor.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this before baby! I didn't have it until I was actually in labor, but I can imagine it is terrible and annoying to deal with before labor.

  • I have an irritable uterus..no fun, started with baby 1 ,and have had it with every pregnancy and am on my fourth.More painful this time,I think it gets worse with more pregnancies.Honestly at this point when possible I just try to relax..im sorry you hurt, take care
  • Thanks ladies! I had never heard of that. You learn something new everyday. It is not fun at all.
  • I was also told I have an irritable uterus. They put me on procardia to try to quiet it down. It worked a bit.
  • I had irritability due to dehydration, 2 bags of IV Fluid and 5 hours later i got to go home. I had no idea that could even happen?!?
  • I had it with my 1st. Major contractions every 2 min for 5 weeks. Two overnights in l&d and procardia didn't work
  • This is my third and IU has gotten worse each pregnancy. I noticed BH at 7-8 weeks (no kidding) and thought I was going to miscarry (I didn't this time thank goodness). I remember with my first I hardly got a break between contractions when I was in labor. I also get BH if I stand up, sit down, roll over, need to pee, while I pee, after I stand up from peeking, if I bend forward, if I squat down, if I walk up the stairs, you name it, it gives me BH. So annoying! Luckily it has never led to cervical changes or preterm labor in any of my pregnancies. Just a nuisance!
  • I've never heard of irritable uterus but your symptoms sound really similar to what I'm experiencing. I've been on bedrest for the last 2 weeks and spent 5 hours in l&d the other day because I just won't stop contracting. No dilation, bag of water is in tact, but contractions ALL THE TIME - especially when I have to pee or walk or stand up. They seem to be getting progressively more painful too. My husband says when it's time to deliver the baby is just going to pop right out because my uterus will be in such good shape! I hope he's right but I also hope she stays put for awhile longer!
  • I went into preterm labor when I was 31 weeks and I was given the works to stop contractions... Ended up having to be life flighted to another hospital with a NICU and kept there for several days. Since then (I'm now almost 35 weeks) I have been having contractions everyday... I've had to go back in to the hospital cause one day I was having over 12 an hour.... So I also know your pain. I'm on procardia as well to keep them somewhat at bay (from what I can tell they just make sure my contractions don't dilate me more than I already am... 3cm) and I'm also on modified bed rest... Soo you're not alone @guendyro. I feel ya.
  • I am on modified bed rest thanks to IU. I have had it with each pregnancy and it seems to get worse with each one. This is my 5th pregnancy and I have had a few overnights in L&D already. I still have 7weeks to go. I am exhausted all the time and now in between contractions my stomach hurts like it is one giant bruise. Definitely not fun but our LOs will be so worth it all!
  • Good to know this is a thing.. I feel like I had contractions all day yesterday (and a couple of other days in recent weeks). We were even right next to our hospital yesterday and I told SO I wasn't quite hospital worried yet but if they continue today I probably will be. Really I was just too scared that they'd keep me or say she was coming if I went in. :-SS

At least now I feel like maybe I'm not crazy..
  • For those of you on a 2nd+ pregnancy with an irritable uterus, were you able to carry to full-term or did it trigger preterm labor?
