confused FTM

So I've gained 40 lbs this pregnancy and found out that I had gestational diabetes. My doctor freaked me out about having a C section bc she expected baby to be heavy and predicted he would be 10 lbs at birth. I just got my US results and baby is only 4 lbs 8 oz at 34 weeks 5 days??? At this week he's suppose to be at least 5 lbs or over ??? I'm now worried..why all this weight and small baby? I wonder what size he will be by week 40?
Do baby's who are small in size take longer to come out? I would hate to go past my due date bc this weight is making it hard to move and breath.
Thank you to those who respond :)

Re: confused FTM

  • Don't worry so much. Babies come in all sizes. I'd rather not have a 10 lb baby and c section, but that's just me. I've had fairly average 6 ish lb babies and it has taken a long time but I was induced both times. And I do t think the size of the baby effects it! Don't worry. I'm sure everything will be fine. Good luck to you!

  • 1) I'm not sure there is any correlation between baby size and how long they take to "come out" at the end. You might consider asking your doctor about your specific situation, but I have friends who go full term (and late) and have below-average-weight babies, and I have had friends who go late and have above-average-weight babies. I wouldn't consider this to be a correlational relationship unless you're talking about general gestational age being off (EDD is off).

    2) You might go past your due date. In fact, the odds are in the favor of a FTM to go past rather than go earlier. Perhaps if you mentally prepare to go late, you'll be able to persevere with less stress when that time comes.

No matter what, that baby won't stay in there forever! You can do this :)

  • I have gained 40+ lbs as well. No signs of GD though and also a FTM. I understand where you're coming from, the extra weight and fluids make it very hard!
Try to remember a lot of the extra weight is fluids in baby's amniotic sac. Also, our own bodily fluids have increased a lot in volume since pre-pregnancy.
I'm sure working with your Dr will help you decide what's best for you and baby for a safe delivery method. Chin up, momma, the end is near and you'll have your beautiful baby to cuddle!!
  • How attached are you to your OB? If it were me and she freaked out like that I would look for an OB that is used to working with women with GD...cause to me it sounds like she isn't. Not all women with GD have 10 pound babies and not all need C-sections. Just an option for you :-).
  • Like PP said there isn't a correlation between size and length in women as it relates to small babies, they may still come earlier. Obv the longer they can stay in the better but you just never know. Mine was 3lb 7oz at 32 week growth check yesterday. So will likely be right over 4lbs at 34 weeks. 4lb 4oz is 10th percentile for 34 weeks. So you are right over that. As long as you are over 10th nothing to worry about and shouldn't have to be monitored. I'm at the 9th percentile so
I have to go weekly just to make sure growth continues. My goal is at least 38 weeks to get over 5lbs. Normally hospitals want to see 5lbs before baby can leave so if over that wouldn't be too worried! Just eat a lot of protein these last few weeks!
  • Attaching this percentile chart where you can see where you are at too. My doctor tells me every time because I'm under the 10th but some may not.
