When is spotting a concern?

about two days ago I had some brown discharge. Throughout today it's increased a bit and is more of a light pink. It's not enough for a pad, but has got me worried. I think I'm 6 weeks now, ultrasound isn't for 2 weeks yet!! Has anyone experienced this? Is it worth a call to the doctor?

Re: When is spotting a concern?

  • I would def call them. They will probably have you come in for blood work. Thoughts and prayers!

  • Call the doctor. Spotting can be normal but isn't always. Best to get checked.
  • It sounds like normal spotting that can occur, but it never hurts to get checked. I had some light spotting with my DD at about 5 weeks and I totally panicked, called my doctor, and by u/s saw that everything was just fine. Turns out it was most likely implantation bleeding, and I did not have any additional spotting throughout my pregnancy. I have not had any with this second babe (currently 9+1), but I definitely check every time I use the bathroom.

  • I had brown discharge between weeks 5 and 6 that was extremely light and stopped within a few days. My OB office first told me that brown means old blood and is not as much of a concern. It can be caused by irritation to the cervix from heavy lifting, sex, or things like that. They told me to only be worried if the bleeding gets heavy like a period and/or its accompanied with painful cramps (not just the regular uterus stretching cramps). On a positive note, I've since had an u/s with a healthy baby & heartbeat so there is a good chance with some light bleeding that it is nothing to worry about.

With that being said, the fact that yours has turned to pink means that something may be actively bleeding. There is obviously not much blood because only a drop or two would make it pink versus red. Again it could just be irritation to your sensitive cervix, but I highly recommend a call to your OB. They will most likely just tell you to keep an eye on it but it is best to let them know. They may ask you to come in for blood work or an early u/s and you can then have peace of mind. Always, always consider any bleeding as concern enough to call your OB!

Thanks so much for the thoughts! I just waiting for the office to open. It's still brown but there was a bit more this morning... Very nervous but keep telling myself it's all good! No cramping at all, so just confused! Spoke with a nurse this morning and she suggested getting in to the dr! Thanks ladies - I will keep you posted
  • I have had light pink spotting every morning almost this whole week. It's light, nothing except for when I wipe the first couple of bathroom trips. I called my ob thinking this was concerning and they told me unless it was heavy, red, and associated with cramps it's nothing to come in over and to stay calm. I really thought that they would have a different reaction but I'm sure they have seen and heard it all so they know when to be concerned. I agree with everyone I would let them know for peace of mind and go from there

  • I've had spotting with all of my pregnancies. Random brown spotting every now and then, or sometimes a little pink after sex. You have an increased blood supply in that whole area during pregnancy, so spotting is pretty common.

I would call my doctor if it was nonstop for a day or more, or if it was getting worse over time. It could still be no big deal, but having had a miscarriage I would really want to see a doctor to find out the cause.

You can always call your doctor about anything. Part of what you pay them for is answering your questions.

  • Some spotting is normal but it's always a good idea to talk to your doctor or nurse line and let them know what's going on.

  • I was told it was normal by a dozen people but insisted on a sonogram. Turns out it was ectopic, so if you feel like it is something else, stand up for yourself.

I've gone for an ultrasound now. I think I'm 6 weeks along, they say I look about 4/5 weeks. I bled a lot heavier last night and today and hasn't let up. My doctor said after the ultrasound things seemed to be ok and he wasn't over conceded, but I'm losing faith. I've gone for blood work and will go again on Saturday - should know more on Tuesday. Thanks for the advice ladies. I'm thinking this is the beginning or some point of a miscarriage but I'll keep some hope alive until Tuesday!
