Right breast not producing

A few days ago we were out and I went way too long without feeding. This caused clogged ducts in my right boob. I tried everything to get it better, pumping, nursing on that side, hot compress, massage, shower etc. and was still painful. Finally after 2 days it went a way but now I feel like I have absolutely no supply in that one. He crys and gets so frustrated nursing on the right that I eventually have to put him on the other and he is instantly better. I have been pumping and pumping the right and literally get maybe 1/4 oz, like just lightly coats the bottom of a bottle. Any suggestions on what I can do to improve this? He seems to be satisfied by just nursing off the left but nervous this will cause issues.

  • LO can't latch on my right but it loves making milk! She latches so well on the left and it's just empty all the time :( I feel your pain

  • I haven't experienced it personally, but I know others have nursed successfully with just one side. I would keep having the baby latch on the right side to start every feed, switching to the left once he shows frustration. I would think if you're still getting milk, you could eventually build your supply back up on that side. Are you still using hot compresses and massage before every feed on the right?
  • @PixelPosy no I'm not. I just did the compress and massage until the ducts cleared. Didn't think of trying it again but will give it a shot!

  • I would keep offering the right and pumping it. I think it will pick up in a few days. It usually takes 48-72 hrs for production to pick up.

  • I was having the same issue. LO hated my right breast. I started just pumping on the right breast while LO nursed on the left for a few days. Although LO still prefers the left, he will nurse from the right now, too!
  • Phew good to know, thanks ladies!

  • Im a FTM and my LO is 3 weeks 3 days.My right is my over producer with 100ml at some pumps right now. I had a clogged duct and just pumped the side as it was too tender to nurse on. My left side gets maybe 40ml if I'm lucky, so my baby girl will get fussy. I have been taking the fenugreek and blessed thistle and have shown some improvement. For the clogged duct I was put on antibiotic for border line mastitis....no fun the medication taste horrible.... :-&
