Kick Count Card

Hi Everyone, I'm a FTM and was giving the kick count card by my doctor to start recording baby's movement this week. I was told that to record it at around the same time everyday (especially after a meal since baby is most active). However, my baby is most active and I can feel baby moves around 2AM-3AM and nothing during the day and/or after dinner. Could someone offers suggestions of how they did theirs count card? Is not feeling baby moves throughout the day and night and then just al little twist and turns at 2-3AM normal?

Thanks

I was never told to actually do kick counts. Just to keep an eye out for any abnormal lack of movement.

My doc said not to worry about recording them, to just count them twice a day and to pay attention of any abnormalities. And from what I've heard, every baby is different and has their own pattern and average time schedule they are active. That being said, ask your doctor about it. Do your counts as you would and bring it up with them at the next appointment.

Edit: Though if you're seriously worried a quick call to your office can never hurt.
  • I work night shift and most of the time my baby is most active at night. It moves a few times a day but is not nearly as active as its big sister was. Just look out for anything abnormal or you will stress out unnecessarily
  • I was never told to count fetal kicks. I was told to be aware of baby isn't moving, or movement slows down or becomes weaker.

This. If I noticed anything unusual to call. Don't feel stupid or like you are being a pain. If you have that feeling that something is wrong then listen to it.

  • How do you even count them? Like is there supposed to be a time where you do it? Or are they supposed to kick a certain amount of times? Sometimes I'll get one kick and others I'll get a few in a row...wasn't told to count either. 32 weeks on Friday.

I was told that after 30 weeks you should pick a time of day when baby is usually active (whenever that is for you) and sit/lay quietly to count kicks. If you count 10 movements of any kind in an hour then great. If you don't, have a cold drink, walk around for a minute then try again. If you still don't get to 10 after two hours you should call your doctor.

Thanks- that is good to know. 10 seems like a lot in a row compared to what I feel as it varies so much. Laying down for bed, constant- throughout the day varies.

Then I don't think you have anything to worry about. As long as there is a time of day that baby is really active (for you it seems like before bed, which is similar for me, as well as early afternoon) and you don't notice any distinct changes in that, that's what you should be looking for from what I understand. Every baby has their own schedule.

  • I also think counting kicks can drive people crazy so not all doctors recommend it, but they should tell you to pay attention to any noticeable decrease in usual activity.
