Miscarriage paranoia

hi! I'm newly pregnant and even though this wasn't planned, I'm over the moon thrilled and already in love with this baby or at least the idea of him or her.

This is my second pregnancy. I have a rambunctious 3 1/2 year old boy whom I adore. My first pregnancy was tough, I was on bed rest for the last two months due to hypertension (without protein in the urine). After 37 hours of labor and pushing, I finally wound up having c-section. After I gave birth I had to have a blood transfusion and wound up on a magnesium bag for post-partum preeclampsia.

Anyway! It wasn't the best experience so I'm really looking forward to enjoying it this time but I'm all of sudden completely preoccupied with the idea of having a miscarriage. I have no idea why! I have never had one before. Is anyone else worried about this?!

Re: Miscarriage paranoia

  • This is a totally normal fear. I don't have much advice other than maybe take a peek at the thread "Chances of NOT having an early miscarriage" for some statistics. At this point, I'd just tell yourself that there's nothing you can do but take care of yourself. A miscarriage would not be because of anything you did wrong.

  • I'm also thinking about this a lot! I found that thread to be reassuring and helpful, but I still find myself worrying! I like to remind myself that the chances of everything being ok increase everyday!
  • I think every newly pregnant woman worries about having a miscarriage. The chart from the other thread is good, as is trying to relax and not think about it. You won't do anything to cause or not cause a miscarriage.

  • Thanks! I hadn't seen that board yet but I'll definitely check it out!
  • @qtpi145 I totally hear you! I am very scared (as well as excited) about this pregnancy since I too was on bedrest and had pre-e with my first. Some ladies had some good suggestions/reassurance in my intro thread about being proactive this time around and asking OB about baby aspirin regimen to prevent high BP. Every pregnancy is different so fingers crossed we stay healthy this time around!

And the chances of not having a miscarriage thread is really great because I know I am a numbers person and the numbers are in our favor.

If you ever want to talk about pre-e, bedrest, and moving on to this next (hopefully uneventful and healthy) pregnancy, feel free to hit me up! You are definitely not alone, mama!

  • @saladflambe I've been doing the same thing!!! I keep thinking "Ok, today will be the last day I do this!" and then I change my mind the next morning. I'll have to stop wasting tests eventually, right!?

Forewarning: there is an HCG curve effect. Eventually, your HCG levels actually go down a bit, so the lines get lighter at that point. (Friends warned me of this)...don't get worried if your lines get lighter!

Actually the lines have more to do with the amount of dye in the test and not as much with the amount of hcg in your system. You could get a faint line simply because the test doesn't have much dye or a dark line because it has a lot of dye.
  • I'm very nervous too. It's my 2nd pregnancy and I wasn't this nervous the first time. That was 8 years ago. But I got pregnant shortly after removing the IUD, didn't have a period, had a bloodtest and had low levels. The dr didn't seem worried at all. The day I got the blood test back I was able to get a positive at home. I'm just supposed to go on 9/28 when I'm around 8-9 weeks. I wish the dr would want to see my numbers doubling. But they just said it's early and given my history of a healthy, uneventful pregnancy, the only thing I can do is wait it out. So I'm being hopeful.
  • I check the "chances of NOT having a misscarrige" thread every day. It helps to ease my mind. =)
  • I am super nervous.  Trying not to think about it means I am thinking about it.  I actually had a miscarriage about 6 months ago.  I am excited and nervous at the same time.  I am trying to remain positive and not stress about it.  My first appt is Sept. 24, I did not make it to my first appointment last time.  Fingers crossed...

  • The ladies on my last BMB always said when you're feeling worried just remind yourself "Today, I am pregnant." That's really all you can do and I know it helped some ladies to stop and remember to appreciate today and the fact that today, you are pregnant.
