Anxiety During Pregnancy

I am currently 11 weeks pregnant (first time) and having nervous/anxious feeling in my stomach that I can't shake. I am not thinking about anything that is making me anxious or having anxious thoughts...it is LITERALLY just the feeling with no thoughts associated with it...almost like butterflies before you have your first date or when you have to speak in front of a big crowd...is this normal? Does anyone else feel this? Just to be clear I have NO anxiety/depression and I am not worrying about the child/pregnancy or anything associated with the pregnancy. It is completely random.

Re: Anxiety During Pregnancy

  • I call it a case of the crazies.... heebie jeebies... instinct

Sometimes it's a reason (panic attack over loss of passport/ID) and other times DH and blame it on the impending bee colony collapse (running joke from a TV show which we can't remember which)

  • It is very common to anxiety during pregnancy, that happens to so many women. Just that terrible anxious feeling, sometimes for no reason at all. I'm sorry you're dealing with that, I was like that with my first pregnancy and some days were very tough!

If this is something that doesn't get better or if you feel like it is getting worse, definitely talk to your doctor about it. There are pregnancy safe medications that can help if this is interfering with your life as well as other options to manage it. You don't have to go through it alone and know that you are not the only one this happens to!
  • Pregnancy can definitely make your body do things out of the normal for you, depression and anxiety is actually common with pregnancy. I have really terrible anxiety and I have been on anti-depressants for almost 4 years for it, and I still had awful anxiety weeks 7-10ish weeks even being on meds so I feel for you! I am only 12w2d now but haven't had much lately. I realized the further along and more "in the clear" I became, the less I had and it turned to excitement.

I hope it ends for you soon because I know how you're feeling. Best of luck!!
  • I have had this after I had my kids the first pregnancy. My doctor said its not anxiety because anxiety is triggered, heights, public speaking ect. It's a panic attack. It happens doe literally no reason. Your heart races, you feel faint. I had to take an antidepressant to stop the panic attacks. It worked but I hated the side effects so after 6 months I stopped taking them and felt fine. I really think it was from all the changing hormones after delivery.
  • So happy I came across this thread! My anxiety is horrendous lately. I hate not being on my Lexapro, but I stopped it when hubby and I began trying. I was good for a month or so, then WATCH OUT! Some days I am fine, others, I am a wreck. I talked to my OB about it and he suggested if it gets worse, we can try Vistaril, but I don't want anything in my system, so I am just trying to relax and not get so emotional. It also doesn't help looking for a new place to live and every single one has rejected me because I have two dogs. Ugh! Positive thinking!

Hey girl. I know all doctors are different. I was on Lexapro forever and loved it, I weaned off when we started talking about trying and did TERRIBLY, so started on what I thought was the safer pregnancy alternative Zoloft.. And my doctor (thank god bc I hated Zoloft) actually recommended me stay on Lexapro. He said he uses it for all his pregnant ladies who feel they can't wean off the meds, and since I'm only on 10mg I'm fine. I feel so much better on it and literally don't know how I'd make it without it!
  • I've struggled with severe Generalized Anxiety Disorder since I was 13 (I'm 33 now). Oddly enough, I've felt like my anxiety has tamed a lot since I've been pregnant. I don't seem to get anxious for no reason anymore. Very, very strange!
  • I'm 10 weeks 3 days, first pregnancy, and totally feel you. I've been anxious lately and unable to pinpoint a cause. Sometimes I feel like I'm going to crawl out of my skin. I've found taking a nice walk and concentrating on my breath/meditating/yoga (simple calming poses) have helped. Of course, sometimes the fatigue doesn't make me motivated to try and exercise. I think I'm just anxiously awaiting my dating ultrasound in 2 weeks. My DH and I tried for this baby for a year, and were just about to consider a fertility workup when I got my BFP! I think it will all feel real when I hear his/her heartbeat for the first time.

No way! Ugh, I am so asking him when I go back in a few weeks! Lexapro is the MIRACLE WORKER! I didn't give a crap about anything! Nothing bothered me, I was so go with the flow! Thanks for that! @crcosmetics
  • So I talked to my friend who is a nurse and she said that it could just be gas or my digestive system changing. Because it's definitely not a panic attack. My heart isn't beating faster and I don't feel dizzy or anything...it is literally just butterflies in my tummy. It's weird. But I guess you go through a lot of changes when you're pregnant so gas feels different. Kind of embarrassing...

  • I already have anxiety, and it gets so bad while I'm pregnant and is so overwhelming.. I get short of breath and always feel on edge and just can't relax, I think it's partially related to the fact that pregnancy makes us feel so crappy physically, so it takes a toll emotionally.
  • I'm with you. I've been feeling terrible lately.
  • I have anxiety anyway, but since I'm 17 I've never gone on medication for it. I've had 2 panic attacks just today for no reason, so I definitely feel my anxiety way up there today. Had to sit down and do some wonderfully effective visual manipulations at work d:
  • Talk to your OB!
It's a risk vs benefits situation. I am bipolar & have terrible anxiety. In my first pregnancy & with this one my OB weaned me off of my mood stabilizer but kept me on my anti-anxiety medication to take as needed. It's a personal preference whether to even seek prescription therapy, however it has been drilled in my head by professionals that "if momma ain't happy, baby ain't happy".
Either way it is common and I wish you luck!
