FTM - has anyone travelled to Mexico at that point in their pregnancy? Just trying to plan ahead and don't want to book anything if all you veterans moms out there are screaming, NO!
I think as long as your OB is okay with it, why not.
We've travelled to Mexico buttloads of times (thanks to DH's job), and it's a pretty easy country to travel to. Bonus: Mexico's temperatures are AWESOME in January.
PS we were just there a few weeks ago and there were a lot of very pregnant women there. Water, shade, and sunscreen are your best friends there!
I agree! When we went it was February and we live in New England. We had a HUGE storm a few days before we left and another one coming the day we left. It had just starting snowing when we took off. Mexico was much more enjoyable. I'd definitely advise bringing a ton of water with you anywhere you go and my OB recommended not eating any of the street fruit as you can't account for its cleanliness and you definitely don't want a stomach bug from Mexico when you're pregnant!
I'm not going to Mexico, but I am going to St. Thomas in January and will also be about six months pregnant. I understand you're probably most concerned about sanitary water, getting a stomach bug, but I think if you drink bottled water you should be fine. For what it's worth, when we were researching destinations I asked my OB about Mexico and she had no reservations. In fact, I wanted to go to Playa Del Carmen, but my family members would not go to Mexico.
So far of all the activities we are considering, it looks like I will still be able to snorkel and go on the sailboats. So no scuba diving, which I wasn't planning on doing anyway, or zip lining. I guess also miss out on the margaritas, but I'll still get to be on a tropical island in the sun
My family's planning a trip to Brazil at the end of February. I'll be 7.5 months.. I'm really on the fence about it, it's the first thing I'm going to ask my Dr. On the 8th lol
I went to CA from MI at about 7 mos. it was fine. I wish I had made myself drink more water on the flight out (I got all crampy), and that we didn't have so much turbulence on the way back, restricting bathroom trips. I got up at one point to go to the bathroom and was scolded by the flight attendant.
You ladies are intrepid. I'm going to be 9 weeks exactly tomorrow and have had very light symptoms (mostly fatigue and bloating and sore breasts, all of which are starting to ease up), so I'm feeling pretty great, albeit worried (like a lot of us waiting out the first trimester). My DH and I have a trip to Rome scheduled for October, when I'll be 15, 16 weeks. It will be a pretty ideal time to travel in terms of my comfort level, and we'll be taking a commercial flight to an industrialized country I know well (lived in Rome for about 6 months as a student and have returned to Italy many times in subsequent years), and yet my husband is freaking out and keeps musing out loud that maybe we should cancel. I've developed a complication that should hopefully resolve in the next few weeks, but it has made him even more paranoid and insistent about not traveling. We go abroad 2 or 3 times every year for pleasure, and I've been to about 25 countries in the past 6 or 7 years (my husband has been to many more because of his job). Traveling is one of the things that really brings us closer. I NEED to travel, and this trip was scheduled just as we started our IVF cycle because A) if it failed, I would need something to lift my spirits, and if it worked and I got pregnant, it would be my last opportunity to go abroad for a while because I don't think I would leave LO for a long stretch of time to go overseas in his first year. I think my husband's head would explode if I entertained the idea of going overseas at 6 or 7 months into my pregnancy! He's being unbearable. In any case, my OB emphasized drinking a lot during the flight, even though it will lead to lots of trips to the lavatory. Also, getting up during a long flight and walking around is even more important during pregnancy. Have fun, ladies!
@kcbarbo78 can I just say I'm a tad bit jealous reading your post?!
My husband and I also love to travel, but DH is almost too responsible with money (if that's possible) to the point where he clams up when it's time to book trips. We went to Italy/France for two weeks for our honeymoon and it was AMAZING (that was also pre-baby).
Now we have a kid, and another on the way, and Recently he said to me "I don't know why we didn't travel more before DS"... I was like... "Ummm..." It took all my might to keep my head from exploding
Do it! By the way, swimming should feel wonderful at that point, cause your bump will be getting a little heavy, and when you get in the water all that stress on your back just vanishes. So have fun in the pool or the ocean.
One thing you might want to look into is getting a maternity swimsuit ASAP. I went on a winter cruise 5mo pregnant with my first, and no one sold them that time of year. You can always wear a bikini and have your bump hang out, but if you want something to cover your tummy it's probably going to need to be a maternity suit. Shopping at Target yesterday, they have them clearanced out at $10 each, so they won't be available much longer.
@ashleymarie1027 because of DH's job, we can travel fairly inexpensive because we don't usually have to pay for lodging, or at most pay steeply discounted rates at 4 and 5 star hotels. (He has lifetime platinum status and millions of points with one international hotel chain because he basically lives in their hotels at his clients' expense during the workweek), and we can sometimes use frequent flyer miles and take advantage of free upgrades. Otherwise, we probably wouldn't travel so much. I'm not sure how much we'll travel after having a child (I never went abroad as a kid, so it's definitely something I want to share with my own LO when he's old enough), so I'm glad we've gotten so much of it out of our system in the last few years. We might be hunkering down for a while and keeping still after October
We're going to Punta Cana in Dec and I can't wait. I even emailed them already to get their list of pregnancy approved spa treatments. I'd splurge on a prenatal massage since you can't partake in the cocktails if I were you! That's what I'm doing at least
I flew cross country at 29 weeks to welcome DH home from Afghanistan and although I don't regret it, I was miserable. And I was tiny too, I gained 20-25 lb total the whole pregnancy. But still, so so miserable on the flight. And I had to pee 72 times an hour which made it worse. I would be leery of overseas travel that far along. A lot of women know if they are high risk for preterm labor, but a lot have no idea. If something were to happen, you'd be stuck there. I would personally limit travels to continental U.S. after viability.

Pro Vax, extended breasftfeeder, ring sling and stroller loving mama. I don't judge you unless you don't vaccinate!
My only advice is to make sure you purchase trip insurance that covers pregnancy complications! With my first, I found out at 20 weeks that I had a complete previa. I was on heavily restricted activity and was not even allowed to travel two hours to participate as maid of honor in my best friend's wedding. So, while I think you should be fine, I would purchase the insurance just in case. You may do that anyway, as we do, but just throwing it out there in case you don't!
We travelled to Mexico when I was 28 weeks and we had a BLAST!! We stayed in Cancun (the hospital there apparently has a neonatal unit) and chose a nicer resort (Sun Palace) with really great reviews. We usually do a bungalow/condo and buy from local markets but we wanted something a little nicer and more established. My doctor gave two thumbs up and said that relaxation would be great for me.
I drank bottled water (and tetra packs of mango juice). The hotel staff were really great. My only regrets that I didn't get to partake in top-shelf all-inclusive drinks, the 2pm sushi buffet and the free bottle of Dom we got and couldn't bring back home. I got a little heat sick at Tulum but nothing major, just got really hot and dizzy quickly. I got in AC and rehydrated very quickly. I pushed myself too far, and I should no better (seriously don't do Tulum at noon, it's just dumb).
Oh and stay away from Dolphins when you're pregnant, they apparently have a tendency to be violent towards pregnant women. I didn't want to snorkel in case we ran into one... which was ridiculous but still better be safe than have a crazed dolphin after you!
I flew to England when I was 32 weeks and I was high risk. But I was also staying about 5 minutes away from an excellent public hospital should anything have happened.

Thank you, both. Very helpful responses.
Missing out on all inclusive cocktails will suck but being in Mexico in January and not Chicago....is worth everything! Thanks, ladies.

All I keep thinking about is Charlotte from Sex and the City eating pudding cups and drinking bottled water the whole time. Haha!
Interesting to know you can still snorkel, I just assumed everything was off limits except swimming.
Lime juice on ice with salt will have to be my margarita!
I make faux-jitos a lot with club soda, lime juice, mint, and a little bit of powdered sugar. They are delicious!
