Breastfeeding

Supplementing (9 months)

My son is 9 1/2 months and I have just returned to work. He has been EBF but he is eating more than I can pump at work. At the rate he is going my frozen supply will be gone next week. I was wondering what formula others used to supplement around this age, and what was the ratio of breastmilk to formula you used?

Re: Supplementing (9 months)

  • My daughter is only 5 months but we had to start supplementing a few weeks ago.  We use Similac for Supplementation (teal can).

Prior to starting formula, she was taking in 4oz of breastmilk at each feeding.  However, now that we've added formula into the mix, it's moved up to 5-6oz per session.

  • How many oz will you be short a day? I used what I got for free in the mail - one of the two reputable brands. To start (8 mo) I put formula in cereal (2 oz) and then after bedtime BF, I offered a bottle of formula (4 oz). Then I sent one bottle to daycare that was formula for lunchtime. I did some extra pumping in the evening and at work to hold out for the most part until 12 mo. My cycle started early so every month I would when my frozen supply was gone I would think that was it, but then I'd have excess two weeks later, repeat. Congrats on 9 mos, wishing you well as you transition!
