Babies: 9 - 12 Months

NBR: Ridiculous Pet People incidents

The neverending saga of the dog-pee baby continues to remind me of this story.

I used to live in Orlando. At the time, my allergies were not as bad, and my ex and I had two cats and a dog who we didn't buy or adopt on purpose, but who was abandoned during the wildfires and followed us home from the conveniences store around the corner and just never left. (See Mama Jan...you can accidentally adopt a dog.)

During the hot Florida summer, Pandora was an incredibly obedient dog. We would let her out in the yard, she would do her business, and she would eagerly come back in because Florida in July is basically as hot as the third ring of HelIl. Come January, when it cooled down to a more temperate 70-80 degrees, the neighborhood was too interesting to come when she was called, and she twice ran a few houses down to visit the dogs she smelled at the corner. A pair of male Rottweilers, unfixed.

We were always right behind her, and she was never at the backyard of this house for more than a minute or two before we came and collected her. But the second time it happened, the guy who owned the dogs said he was going to report us to the authorities for allowing our dog outside when it was so cold. It seems he was a pet psychologist, and believed the reason Pandora was so eager to come to his home was because of the terrible abuse we were inflicting upon her by subjecting her to weather scantily clad people North of the Mason Dixon line pay big bucks to enjoy every January.

Sorry, but I am from Minnesota and Pennsylvania. From a dairy farm, and rural hunting country. Where cats live in the barn, and animals NEVER live inside, and my grandmother is still horrified that someone at church might find out she thawed a newborn calf in the bathtub to save its life 50 years ago.

Am I seriously the only one who thinks that pet psychiatrists, and animal behavioralists, et al, are the most ridiculously bizarre moneymaking racket in the world? I mean, seriously, we have a healthcare crisis in this country, and most of the homeless people on the street are there because of a lack of mental health treatment and closing of mental health facilities over the last 30 years, but it is desperately important to worry about a schnauzer's identity crisis and make sure he gets his Pupzac?

  • Amen!! While I believe that their personalities can change when something changes around them I don't think there should be people who get paid for the freakin job. My dog was a nut job before DS and is even worse now but there are bigger things in this world. You can get a degree and have a hard time finding a job right now BUT hey at least the dog's happy. And so I don't get flamed, I LOVE animals, but seriously people need to draw the line.

  • Thanks for the affirmation.

And btw, I absolutely LOVE the suspicious look your son is giving that pony. It cracks me the f up.

  • No problem. Anytime. I agree a lot with you on most subjects, just don't speak up often.

Thanks, I just know he was thinking WTF are you?

  • I don't need t pay someone to tell my that my dog is acting a little different because there's a baby in the house. No, I'm good. They are ridiculous.

  • I think people are in different camps about animals.  Some are like you, Lori-animals have their place and they work for us.  And some consider Pets as fur family.

So never the twain shall meet.

  • Brahim - Why are you trying to interject reason? Postkiller! How is this supposed to invoke blithering hysteria among the Animalians if you're all calm and rational?

    Devil

  • i read somewhere one time that "before you have kids your dog/furbaby is your baby and after you give birth then your dog is just a dog". I love my dog, she gets on my f-ing nerves but I love her, so when I heard that I thought OMG NEVER!! She will always be my little baby...........

    .......yeah she's just a dog.

    still love her.
