Fetal tachycardia

Hello everyone, wanting to gather some thoughts as my appointment with a specialist isnt until the 22...

During my 20week anatomy scan the tech mentioned that my sons heartrate was a little tachy, going from 160ish to 172. She asked the dr to come look, he told her it was fine w/o checking. Had another ultrasound four weeks later, same thing happened so the tech talked the dr into putting through a referral for a specialist for an in depth ultrasound. (Tricare).

Babys heartrate has been 150-170 whole pregnancy and both of my two other boys were around the same. I wasn't worried until I saw my regular dr finally and I asked her what she thought and she said it was high at 165. I don't know why she had never mentioned that before now, being that I am 25 weeks.

So after all that rambling, has anyone else experienced this? I never thought that was high and am starting to freak out a tad. I do have one cup of coffee a day, which I was told was fine but am thinking I should stop even though my dr had no opinion on the matter. (Gotta love military drs).

Re: Fetal tachycardia

  • I had an appointment around 18 weeks where the HR on Doppler was 190. The midwife repeated it a few minutes later and it was the same. She said it could be illness (for me, not baby), dehydration, too much caffeine... I woke up the next day with a bad cold, kept up with my water intake for the next few days, and it was down to 160 at the follow-up I had two days later. Could you have been dehydrated? I'll keep my fingers crossed that extra water resolves the issue for you, too!

  • Thanks for the response, @LMH72. I have been drinking over a gallon of water a day so I don't think it's that. Guess I'll find out in a few weeks!
  • 170 isn't considered tachy from my understanding. I'm
Not looking at my book, but I believe that's within range. 190 is tachy

  • Is your baby active when the heart rate is being taken? On ultrasound and Doppler appointments where my little man is flipping and kicking all around, his heart rate ranges from 170-180. If he is relaxing or sleeping it's usually in the 150's. My OB told us this fluctuation is normal, as it is with adults who have a resting pulse and an active pulse.
  • I am by no means an expert, but from my understanding too… The heart rate can vary and that doesn't sound unreasonable.

I understand being stressed out, but I think that you should do your best to try to stay calm and see what the specialist says. Believe me, I know that's easier said than done… But as an adult with tachycardia, I can tell you that it's not always a worst case scenario.

Sending thoughts and prayers your way.
  • Thanks so much everyone for responding. I had always thought it wasn't tachy until 190 as well. Everytime it has been a little higher, he has been moving around a lot. So thanks for helping me feel better!
  • I have no experience but wanted to send you some support and good vibes. Trust your gut and keep calm. It will all be well.
