Trying to Get Pregnant

Multiple follicles: Trigger shot?

Hi! I had my u/s yesterday and we have three good sized follicles. Yay! I am scheduled to have my ovidrel injection today. My questions is this:

Will getting the shot further increase my chance of multiples? And would it be dumb to not get the shot and hope for the best?

I don't want multiples but don't want to waste a chance this month on conceiving.

Thoughts?

  • Most REs are perfectly happy with 3 follicles.  What's your progesterone levels?  I had 4-5 mature follicles but my Progesterone was a little low, so RE suggested I continue the cycle (and did).  I second PP, what does RE say?

Also, what was the medication?  Was it Follistim or Letrozole/Clomid?
  • Ditto PP's.  I conceived on a cycle with 3 follicles and also conceived with 4 follicles (one baby each time).  If your RE is checking your estrogen levels with b/w at the time of ultrasound that number will give you a better idea of how many eggs you potentially have.  Not every follicle has a mature egg in it.  I am also curious about the medication you are taking.  I have taken Femara and the risk is lower with that versus injectible meds.

Correct me if I'm wrong ladies, but isn't the trigger shot just making sure that you ovulate within 24-36 hours?  If your follies were checked and they looked mature enough, than that is the time to take the trigger and get ready for the IUI or TI.  I know other bumpers on here that had 4 mature follies and still got a BFN.  I think your chances of multiples goes up and like @juliehollz13 said that it goes up no matter what when you have a medicated cycle.  But i think the chances of multiples are around 5%.

babyexpress - Correct, the trigger makes you ovulate.  If you have too many follicles you risk multiples and may want to consider canceling the cycle (and I think that's what the OP was considering).

I don't really believe a statistic of 5% as some ladies are super conservative and would cancel before risking multiples and therefore skewing the numbers.

Also, Follistim/injectibles drastically increases the chance for multiples over oral medication.  So that's why it was also asked what medication.

Got it.  I did Follistim this round and did not last month.  I went from 1 mature follie last month to 4 this month.  My RE discussed the chances of multiples going up this round and I had to sign another consent form.

    I knew it going in.....Its a personal decision for sure....and a risk.

  • Right/  So obviously important to OPs question (different medication respond differently).  Also, my RE said follistim follicles are stronger/better and more likely to be fertilized.

Hey our Betas are the same day!!

  • @kgbbsc7 oh cool, keep me posted.  Exciting!

By the way, Dr. Google told me about the 5%, so he could be full of it.

  • I believe the 5% may be correct, that continue with a cycle.  I wish there would be a statistic for how many cancel a cycle for the RISK of multiples (from too many follicles).  Also, my RE said twins with Follistim was about 20% chance.  Some studies even go up to 30% chance of twins with injectables.
  • I'm good with 1 baby, I'm good with twins.  Whatever is planned for me i'll take....well except being an OctaMom.
