Excess Fluid

I posted about a month ago that I was diagnosed with marginal placenta previa at 17 weeks. I went back today at 21 weeks to check and see if it's moved up at all, which it hasn't. So that sucks. On top of that, she told me that my amniotic fluid is high, in the 97th percentile! 4 weeks ago I didn't have this problem. Some possible causes are GD (haven't been tested yet), kidney or swallowing problems with the baby, and chromosomal abnormalities (blood tests came back with very low risks). Apparently 50-60% of the time the cause excess fluid is unexplained. The nurse practioner I spoke with didn't mention having anything checked at this time, but wants me back in 3 weeks to check on it. Of course, no sex, exercise, etc. She did say that diet and eating a lot of sugar may have something to do with it. I'm hoping that's it... Last night I had a huge piece of cake after dinner, a cookie with breakfast today, and I've definitely been going overboard on the sweets overall. Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced high fluid volume, and if so what happened? I'm frustrated because with my first pregnancy I had zero issues, and now I have two, both of which happen in only 1% of pregnancies.

Re: Excess Fluid

  • I had high fluid with my first for unexplained reasons, although the best guess was un-diagnosed GD. I ended up having 3 months of non-progressive contractions due to the fluid stressing out the uterus, and when my water broke it was rather spectacular. For the 3 months of contractions I was in the hospital every week for non-stress tests and ultrasounds just to make sure everything was fine with my son, and afterwards all was well. My son is happy and healthy and was a normal weight (8lbs 10oz) and with this pregnancy I am not considered high risk or anything special. Honestly, I probably wouldn't worry too much about it until or unless something untoward happens. I would watch the sugar/carb intake, but we should all be eating healthier anyway.

  • One of my best friends had excess fluid with all 3 of her pregnancies that was unexplained. Only thing that seemed to happen is that with all 3 of her c sections the babies needed assistance breathing for a couple of hours post delivery. I'm not sure if that's related to the extra fluid I would assume probably not.
  • I had this with my last pregnancy for about 6-12 weeks. I didn't have GD. I was with an MFM and she monitored it. When I followed her recommendations very strictly the levels decreased dramatically. Basically, I upped my water consumption dramatically - 12-15 glasses a day and I also added 50 grams of protein to my diet. I did this by adding in 2 high protein ensure shakes. I also drastically cut my intake of refined carbs/sugar. The bonus of adding the extra protein was that it cut my sweet cravings down. I found adding lemon to my water helped me better flush out my system too.

I might ask your provider given the high fluid levels if you can take the GD test early to see if that is the cause. If you do have GD, the sooner you know, the more time you have to potentially lower the fluid levels.
  • @skfg Thank you that helps a lot
