"Back" to sleep HELP!!!

So I absoultely know the importance of having your baby sleep on his back however my baby will not!! Everytime he is on his back he screams bloody murder....we have tried swaddling him, we have tried using the wedge, we have tried Co sleeping and nothing seems to work....not sure what to do at this point. My husband and I take turns letting him sleep on our chest all night long and it's darting to take it's toll. We brought it up to the doc at his 2 week apt and DC said it was okay for him to sleep on his tummy as long as we were able to watch him (ie during the day) i try to put him on his back as much as I can during the day but he might only last 10 minutes tops before he starts screaming!! It breaks my heart because he screams as if he is in pain so I either turn him on his belly and he sooths right down but then I'm stuck there watching him.....
ANY advice is GREATLY appreciated!!! We go in for his 2 month check Friday and I'm going to bring up to the doc again but would love other mom's advice as well if anyone has experienced this

Re: "Back" to sleep HELP!!!

  • May be a sign of reflux - ask your ped about it, maybe a script for Zantac?
  • Loading the player...
  • We put our daughter in a rock n play to sleep... I think she feels more secure and isn't laying flat on her back. I will say her favorite spot is on either my chest or my husbands. She's actually asleep on my chest right now. Good luck!!! Hope you get some rest soon!
  • My son prefers to sleep on someone's chest too- but I have other kids to take care of. My lifesaver has been my bouncer.... it has a kickstand that makes it lay back similar to those rock and play sleepers. I have it right next to my side if the bed and he sleeps in that.
When we'd try to put him in his crib he'd wake right back up and this has allowed us all to get sleep. He actually slept 5 hours straight last night! (Probably wont happen again for months but hey, its progress)
  • My son falls asleep every time I wrap him on me. Actually he'll fall asleep on anyone in a wrap. Maybe put her in one and walk around til she falls asleep and then lay her down
  • @ashleytiff I've only just begun to use my wrap and used it a couple of times… It seems as though he goes to sleep but when I take him out he is disturbed & wakes up.
  • I put my girl in a reclined bouncy chair... In her crib. Had to get creative ha. I wanted to have her in her own crib/room as soon as possible and was never interested in having her in our room. She didn't do well flat on her back in the crib, so we compromised :) Try a swing, rock & play, or bouncy chair. Also- I know it's rather unpopular, but have you tried (WITHIN REASON of course) crying it out? Sometimes my girl will scream her head off for 5 min and go to sleep. I've read/learned that while they do need comfort, they also need to be able to go to sleep on their own. Keep your chin up mama you'll get him figured out :)
  • We had to make the cot have an incline- timber under the head end of the legs
    (Was recommended by dr)
  • We had this issue the first week as well but the rock n play was a Godsend! Lately she sleeps with us though as she is more acclimated to being on her back now. After she eats during nighttime feedings we swaddle her and use an app called Relax M which has various noises. You can make a custom blend of sounds and it helps to put her to sleep and keeps her asleep. We also run the fan all night and the extra white noise seems to soothe her.
  • Agree rock n play!
  • @ecloho my baby would wake up every time I took her out too. It took a lot of practice to get her out asleep but she's 8 weeks now and I've been using it since week 1 and she'll sleep right through the transition. Take it slow and get the LO used to it, it'll happen!
  • What about proping one end of the bassinet up so baby is not flat? Or using a wedge so baby is on the side to sleep rather than the back but cannot roll onto their face?
  • Wedges aren't recommended but I've heard that you can put something under the crib mattress to give it a bit of an incline
  • Be careful with wedges and making something incline that isn't made to. I highly suggest the rock and play or a seat that is at a reclined position that puts the baby's neck at a good position (not slumped over or chin buried in chest).

I agree with a pp that said maybe LO is having a bit of reflux. GL
