April 2016 Moms

1st appointment, waste of time!

Had my first doctors appointment today, and according to this and my doctor I will be 8 weeks tomorrow. HOWEVER. The only thing that happened was they told me to get blood work, buy a prenatal, and not eat soft cheese. Said I could come back in 1-2 weeks for a first prenatal appointment. The doctor literally did not even touch me or make me pee in a cup. Why couldn't that have been done over the phone??? Totally wasted my time and my husbands. And now it's two more weeks before I even know if the baby has a heart beat??? I can't believe this is how that was supposed to go!

Re: 1st appointment, waste of time!

  • I feel your pain! I had my first appointment last week and my doctor didn't examine me either. Was told to schedule an ultrasound with a very busy hospital. (which won't be until 9/22) and come back in 4 weeks. I made a stink about it and got to see my doctor again today. However, I only got a pap smear and orders for blood work.

  • I guess it was more of a confirmation of pregnancy appt (as they will get your HCG levels through bloodwork). They probably should have let you know that when you made your appt initially. The good news is that at least at your first u/s you'll see something that resembles a baby more than a fuzzy blob.

  • As bad as it sounds I am glad my Dr doesn't see me until 11 weeks. At the standard 8 the baby looks like a blob and that's all.

  • I'd rather be able to see a blob that has a heart beat than nothing at all, but I can accept that it's too early for an ultrasound... My point is that they should not have had me come in AT ALL, just ordered the blood work and told me to come in in a few weeks! This was just a way for them to scam my insurance company!
  • I was annoyed I had to wait to 8wks for an u/s this time and almost changed drs. With my other two babies, I had a u/s at 6 wks. I have also had two miscarriages so I was hypersensitive to hearing the hb. I would definitely be annoyed too!

If you really feel that way about your OB, perhaps you should find a new one. It doesn't seem as though you trust them at all.
  • This is my second pregnancy. First was a mmc at 7 weeks 5 days. The normal first visit at my dr office is u/s blood work and then you see the nurse. The 2nd visit you see the dr.
  • I think that's pretty standard....my first appointment is a pregnancy confirmation and then I don't go back until 12 weeks for blood work. No ultrasound until 20 weeks, unless there is concern. There is really no use getting mad about standard procedure, and like others have said, if you really don't like it, find another OB.
  • I think every doctor and practice is different. My doctor starts u/s at 6 weeks and sees me every 2 weeks until 12 weeks. At my 8 week appointment this last Monday, my baby was going nuts wiggling arms and legs every where. My mom went with me since DH couldn't and she got a kick out of how active the baby was so early. I don't remember DD being that active. Next time at my 10 week appointment they also do a blood draw to look for chromosomal defects and determine gender (although we will stay team green).

  • It definitely depends on the dr.  My dr has an u/s machine in office and will do a scan every appointment, if you want. He likes to see you at 8 weeks, and then every 4 weeks until about 30 weeks, unless something comes up. Because of previous MCs, he sees me as soon as my betas are high enough for something to show up on an u/s. I agree with the others.  If you don't like how your ob does his job, then find a new one.
