Support needed - small babies

Moms with small babies - how do you not worry about your LO's weight? I am freaking out about it and can't stop worrying despite talking to pediatrician. At 3 months she is only 10 pounds and hasn't gained any weight in two weeks. Up until now she was gaining about a pound a month. We're breastfeeding (pumped milk into bottles) on demand but now I'm really tracking ounces and making sure I wake her to eat 25-27 oz a day. She was only taking 21-22 oz and even though dr said it was okay another one told us it is not okay.

So, how do you not worry? I know she's exceeding milestones but can't stop the worry and mom guilt.

How much do your small babies eat?

Re: Support needed - small babies

  • My little man is in the 20th percentile for weight but 95th on height. I am not worried because his dad is very tall and lean also. I didn't agree with the pediatrician that he needed to weigh more. I can't force him to eat. I ebf and tried giving pumped bottles after nursing and he doesn't take it. He is happy while he is awake. He also produces several dirty diapers a day so that helps me feel better too.

If she's happy and you're getting the wet/dirty diapers I wouldn't worry. Every baby is different and it will work itself out.

  • I was about to post on this. DD was doing ok on her weigth. She was 11.14 LBs at 2 month appointment. At 65 percentile weigth and 95 percentile heigth. But since I'm back to work and she's going to daycare, i feel like she has Not gain any weigth. She's getting longer though. I try to feed her as much I(she) as can when we get home, but she usually does not want to. Now it's even worse since she decided to sleep 12hrs(5:30PM_ 5:30 Am). I tried waking her up to eat, but she won't eat for mommy.
  • My little girl is 4 months now and is just under 12 pounds. She was born 5 weeks early weighing 5 lbs 10 ounces. So she doubled her birth weight by 4 months just like a baby should. I pump and supplement with formula. She eats 4 ounces every 2.5 hours and sleeps through the night! Everyone says "wow" when I tell them how old she is because she's so tiny. She's tall though. I also needed reassurance. But MD says she's gaining well and is right on track developmentally. We just get to enjoy them tiny for longer lol!
  • @jesshowland, we get that a lot too. No one ever believes she is 4 months old because she's so tiny. We had our 4 month appointment yesterday and she was 11 pounds, 12 ounces and 23 inches long. 13th percentile in weight and 10th percentile in height. I was only really worried when she had her 1 month checkup and was only 3 ounces bigger than her birth weight. That was when we figured out I wasn't making enough milk and she's been on formula and growing ever since.

Now her Dr isn't worried and she is healthy and hitting all her milestones. She eats 6 ounces every 3-4 waking hours and she sleeps 10-12 hours at night.
  • My DD was 5 weeks early and 5lb 2oz. She was 9lbs 9oz at 2 months, then she got bronchitis and was 10lb 10oz at 4 months. I upped her to 6oz bottles, one being formula because I can't get any more pumped, and that's going well. She gained 15oz last week and seems like that amount works for her.
  • My lo was born 6.12, but likely her next day weight of 6.5 was more accurate since I had been on iv fluids for 12 hours before her birth.  We had lots of breast feeding challenges, but by 10 weeks we figured out we needed to supplement with some formula as well.  She had a lot of weeks even with supplementing where she didn't gain more than 2 or 3 oz.

Bottom line, she's gaining better now, but is still around 11lbs, and in the 3rd percentile.  Her doctor is pressuring me to get her back up around the 15th percentile (where she was at birth), but since she's filled out and is gaining steadily and is a very active girl meeting all milestones, I'm not stressing about it.  She will be petite I think regardless.  I was a tiny kid until about 5th grade, so she might be like mommy.  She's never lacked for wet/dirty diapers.
  • As long as baby is having 6-8 wet diapers and good dirty diapers 1-3 times a day they are fine. I wouldn't stress that much on weight every baby is different. My LO was 5pounds 10 ounces at birth. Dropped to 5pds1ounce when we left. At 3 months she was 10 4 and at 4 months she is only 12 pounds 2 ounces. We EBF but just recently I started back working and she only takes 2.5 ounces bottles every 3 hours. Breast fed babies don't gain weight as fast as formula fed. Your BM is supplying LO with all they need. If LO is satisfied after feedings they I wouldn't worry. Your doing fine momma. MY pediatrician is supper supportive and thinks we are doing fine! Hang in there and keep up the good work. Remember to compare babies weight to the weight they went home with not their birth weight when you look at growth charts. That was my biggest challenge that she had not doubled her weight at 3 months but then I read a great article on Kelly mom that states to compare that to babies going home weight not the birth weight and I have since quite worrying. As long as baby is satisfied and having good wet and dirty diapers your doing great.
  • My son was born 8lbs with Gastroschisis. So he didn't eat until he was 3 weeks old. They started him very small amount of pumped milk but kept having setbacks. So In July they finally found a formula that he reacts well too ( he has very bad digestive issues). Before they found the correct formula he lost a couple of pounds and wouldn't gain. He was 3 months old and 11lbs when discharged. 1 week ago he was 12lbs 3oz he turned 4 months on the 6th. He is small but since being home is gaining weight steadily. Which all of his doctors ( pedi, GI, nutrition) are all happy. All babies are different as long as they are gaining and not losing. If your doctor isn't concerned you shouldn't be unless your LO loses weight or not keeping feedings down etc.
