So the diagnosis is not as severe as initially thought (initial diagnosis was truncus arteriosis). I saw the pediatric cardiologist and he says that it looks like the baby's heart has two separate vessels for the aorta and pulmonary artery (as there should be).
The aorta is positioned towards the middle of the heart as opposed to away from the center septum (probably why it presented as one vessel at my last a/s). He said it looked like there was a Ventricular Septal defect that caused the aorta to be where it is. But this is not as bad as the initial diagnosis. The hole caused by the defect may even close up on it's own to the point where surgery would not be necessary.
I will be going back in a few weeks to monitor the heart and to confirm
that some of the vessels from the heart that the doc was not able to see
are okay.
I went ahead and did the amnio so I am waiting on those results. The MFM was very reassuring, telling me that all the physical features and symmetry of the anatomy are good signs for a baby without chromosomal issues. I am so glad that my baby's heart is does not have a very severe defect that I think I can handle anything that doesn't limit the viability outside the womb. But either way I feel much more at peace with the of 'good' news about the heart.
Thank you to everyone who wrote to support me and kept me in their thoughts and prayers.
Re: UPDATE: Troubling a/s scan result
I go in 2 weeks for mine. Nervous and will also be relieved to have answers.
