Femur Growth issues

I am 21 weeks and 4 days. We had our big anatomy scan yesterday. Our regular OB warned us there could be a cleft lip. He thought he saw one in the previous ultrasound. The baby does have a cleft palate. However we had no idea there were any femur issues. The dr and the tech at the university he referred us to said the femur growth is a month behind. The arms a little short, but they aren't worried about that. Everything else looks good they said. Just the cleft palate and the femurs. The dr said our baby will more than likely never walk and his femurs won't ever catch up. He also made a comment about a still birth being more likely now. Other than that they don't have answers. Has anyone else dealt with this? We are heartbroken.

Re: Femur Growth issues

  • Wow that's so much, are they going to recommend an amnio to check for possible underlying genetic issues or are they going to wait and see as the pregnancy progresses? I know this may not be comforting but many women receive news that their baby's will "never" do something only to find out later on that they can. It's most certainly way to early to know. I hope you get more information and that the outcome is far more positive than what I'm hoping is a worst case scenario given by your doctor. FX for you and your little one.

  • I am so sorry to read this :(. I have also been going through some extremely difficult suspected problems with my baby and it is nerve racking and heart breaking all at the same time. Personally, I recommend an amnio. I had one yesterday to figure out DEFINITIVELY what in the heck is going on with my son. The initial results come back Thursday. It is so nerve racking. I will love my child regardless, however "not knowing" what MIGHT be wrong with him is something that I can't handle. There is risk in amnio, but the risk of something bad happening as a direct result of the procedure is less than something else going wrong at this point in my pregnancy. I am 20 weeks + 2 days. I wish you luck and pray for good things :).
  • I'm sorry to read this, I would search maybe on the high risk board as someone may have posted before, perhaps there is some good information or at least an experience to read.
Thoughts and prayers to you and your little one. Doctors tell people "they will never" or "odds are against" and lots of those people defy those odds or statements.

  • Thank you all. I got the amino done today. They had to go in twice because baby kept going near the needle. At one point he even held on to it. He moves all the time. I'm trying to stay positive.
  • andreachristine81 I'm praying everything turns out okay with yours as well!

  • So sorry to hear this. Glad u will get down answers from the amnio and have a better answer of what to expect. I work with kids and their families who were told they "would never" and doctors are not always right. Keep us posted on what they find out .
