Infertility

IVF PGD and ICSI.

Hello! I'm doing IUI's until my FMLA kicks in about two months. As I wrote in a previous post, my job was not understanding about having to take a day off to travel for a weekend IUI. (My local clinic is closed on the weekend, and the main HQ does it Sat & Sun). With IVF, I will also have to travel to the HQ for the retrieval and transfer. My question to all those who've done IVF, or are pondering it, will you go ICSI with PGD? ICSI is covered insurance wise, but PGD would be OOP at around $5,000. I've had a few miscarriages, one at ten weeks (chromosomal issue) and two biochemicals.

What are your IVF plans?

Re: IVF PGD and ICSI.

  • I've done 2 rounds of IVF both with ICSI because of MFI issues. We have not done PGD simply because we haven't had enough embies to do that. Both times we haven't had any make it to freeze. My cousin did do PGD we have the same RE and he recommended it because she also had two miscarriages both were chromosomal issues. I would discuss it with your RE and see what they say.

  • We are very unsure if we will do IVF or not but I think ICSI is covered by my insurance..we have no male issues but I figure if we go down that route and it is covered we might as well do it..it can only up the chances of eggs being fertilized.  As for PGD I don't know..I would need to learn more about it and see what my RE recommends for me.
  • My DH and I are doing IVF with ICSI, but not PGS. I'm 34 with no failed IVF attempts so it's not a great call for us. I've never had a pregnancy or miscarriage so there's no way to gauge my egg quality besides my age. If I were older or had several failed IVF we would probably do it.
  • So sorry to hear of your struggles and hoping that this IVF experience is a success for you.

We did our first IVF cycle  in July with ICSI due to Male Factor.  It was also covered by our insurance.  During ER,  they retrieved 11 eggs with 8 mature (capable of being fertilized) and with ICSI,  all fertilized.  I would probably say, if your insurance covers it, then I would go for it.  It certainly doesn't hurt and I do feel like it gets you one step closer to the goal!

We also did PGD, both 36 and I have no hx of prior miscarriages etc.   I have mixed feelings on it.   After PGD, we were told we only had 1 "normal" embryo.   Since getting those results we've talked to other people who did PGD and those who didn't....some people feel PGD discounts embryos that could go the distance but aren't  "perfect."  Truthfully, I don't know what the right way to go is.  We thought PGD would help us avoid the heartache of a miscarriage, but I will say getting the news of only 1 good embryo was  pretty devastating.   My advice would be to really talk with your RE on the PDG testing and try and learn as much about as you can.  It sounds like if you have had previous miscarriages due to chromosomal abnormalities, then maybe PGD would be helpful in getting you over that hurdle and to the happy positive pregnancy test result we are all waiting for!

    Good luck!

  • I'm doing IVF with half ICSI and half normal fertilization. My RE wants to see what my husbands swimmers do on their own. But still have ICSI as a back up.
    We aren't doing the testing ... I'm 29, so I don't feel like it's necessary just yet.
