What test are you getting?

Hey guys first time pregnant woman here... I am a scardy cat when it comes to going to the doctor. I am most nervous about all the poking and prodding. Do you guys know what test you are going to get done? There are so many things you can read on the Internet to make you weary of certain ones.

Re: What test are you getting?

  • We will have the initial u/s at 10/12wks, the 20wk u/s, and the GD test, but that's all.

    Same here.
  • I'm calling my insurance to see what all they cover and going from there.

  • Same as PP - won't be doing any genetic testing... My doctor phrases it as 'if it won't change your decisions, then I wouldn't do it'.
  • We are not doing any genetic testing.  We didn't with DS either.  DH and I have health and family histories that put us in a very low risk category.

It will be the typical PIAC every appointment, pap, initial blood panel including routine HIV testing, GD test at 28 weeks (unless OB requests an earlier test like last time at 20 weeks), initial transvaginal ultrasound on Thursday, anatomy scan around 20 weeks, and any additional US's and NST's as requested by my OB.  (I was high risk with DS and had 10 US's and 12 NST's during that pregnancy.)

  • We didn't do genetic testing. Had u/s at 9 weeks, 18 weeks, and then weekly ones in my 3rd tri and a few NSTs at the end (I was measuring 3-4 weeks ahead from 28 weeks onwards and had very high amniotic fluid). Had bloodwork done every 2 months for my anemia to adjust my iron supplement levels.

  • I called my insurance and they will pay for anything that is preventive. My DH and I do not have any family that has major issues so I am not sure about the genetic test. I do not like the unknown so we may go ahead and get the blood test since its free.
  • As of right now, we'll only be doing the blood and urine tests, no invasive genetic testing. It's just not worth the risk to us.

I may spring for the cell- free DNA testing if my insurance will cover it. But again that's only a blood test, nothing invasive.
  • is anyone planning to get the blood gender test?

  • My husband wants to get the blood gender test. I figure it'd be nice to know early, but I'm unsure if insurance covers it. If it's not too expensive out of pocket we may just spring for it so we have more time to plan.

  • I'm getting the Harmony blood test.  My insurance doesn't cover it, but my doc worked out a plan with the provider where it's $130 max out of pocket, so we decided it was worth doing.  I can go for the test starting on Thursday so I am anxious and excited for getting the results!

  • I went for my panorama test this morning. It will test for genetic conditions as well as give us the sex of the baby! Can't wait to find out
  • I'll be doing standard initial bloodwork, the genetic condition/sex blood test, and gestational diabetes as far as bloodwork goes.

Probably at least a couple ultrasounds, depending on what my OB wants. Anatomy scan for sure, and I'm considering an NT scan. Maybe a size and position scan later on if my OB wants it?

I'm due for a pap smear, so I'll do that at my first appointment I think. And then probably nothing where I have to take my pants off again until group B strep at the end, and last time I opted for the cervix check when I approached my due date.

  • I'm doing and/or have done every possible test. Urine, blood work for HCG, progesterone, cell free DNA (which checks for the trisomys and gender), cystic fibrosis, the whole nine yards. I've had two miscarriages due to generic issues, and I'd rather be prepared. We don't intend to terminate if there is something wrong, but want to know what to expect. Also, there are a lot of conditions that being prepared for can really help immediately after birth. I personally believe being prepared is always best.

  • Like PP I'm high risk, so I've been doing (and will continue to do) regular blood tests checking for just about everything.  I had my first ultrasound at 4 weeks due to OHSS (a complication from IVF), another at 6 weeks, another next week at 8 weeks, so on and so forth.  I am intimately acquainted with the transvaginal ultrasound wand at my doctor's office and the phlebotomist knows me by name and has memorized my birthdate.  Before going through IVF my husband and I did genetic counseling, so that stuff is already taken care of.  The joys of infertility!

  • I've done different levels of testing with each of my successful pregnancies, but it basically amounts to everything plus some experimental tests during my first, and less with all the others. I know this time I'll be having a viability scan, which I hadn't done until my last pregnancy, which was a traumatic missed miscarriage, and I'll have diabetes testing a couple of times because of family history, and gbs testing in the third trimester. Everything else is up in the air, but whether it's because my last loss has me afraid, or because I'm getting older and a grand multip, I'm leaning towards slightly more than the next to nothing I did with my last three kids.
  • For those electing not to do an NT, a lady in my DS's bmb posted a few things that can be beneficial about getting it, even if "you wouldn't do anything". FIrst of all, it's not a test for downs, it's a test to determine likeliness of a few trisomies. With those, come many other factors, such as heart issues with Downs etc, that may affect your delivery location and NICU team etc. Also, I don't remember what it was, but there was something else that they can find at the NT scan that they can no longer find at the 20 week anatomy scan, where babies need to have emergency surgery at birth. Let me see if I can track down what it was she wrote. I urge everyone to consider this test even if they wouldn't change their minds based on outcome, it can really be lifesaving in some cases!
