Re: Everything I eat gives me bad heartburn

  • Welcome to pregnancy, unfortunately as baby gets bigger this issue can become worse with space running out. If you haven't already tried tums I suggest you do. I eat them like candy. If you find that doesn't work talk to your doctor, they may be able to prescribe something a little more powerful.

  • Prilosec was the only thing that worked for me. I had the ok from my doctor first.
  • I try tums but they don't help
  • Zantac works for me. My acid reflux is so bad.

I started Zantac at 28 weeks and it was amazing. I wish I had ditched the Tums and started it earlier. It is safe during pregnancy.

ETA I was using the prescription which is preventative. You take it twice a day. You can also use the OTC kind that you just take after it starts, but it's not as effective.

You need to discuss medications with your doctor.
  • I had the same problem and spoke with my doctor. She prescribed a daily pill for me and things have been amazing since.  She said she sees women who end up with a mouth full of cavities because of the acid, so it's important to treat it when it's this bad.  Good luck & I hope you get some relief soon!

  • I was having really bad heartburn and I went to the chiropractor. He was able to make a small adjustment and I haven't had it badly since. Tums can actually make the problem worse in the long run because your stomach acid needs to be acidic. Talk to your doctor absolutely but I would also recommend finding a chiropractor who has worked with pregnant ladies in the past. It might be exactly what you need!
  • Aren't they expensive

You would have to talk to your doctor but there are a couple over the counter medication for heartburn that a pregnant woman can usually take. My doctor has me on pepcid maximum but you could also usually take zantac.

With my first pregnancy I pretty much couldn't keep anything down for the last 3 months and didn't get a lot of sleep every night because my heartburn will keep me up. This time around I knew better and there were a couple things that I did to avoid having really bad heartburn especially towards the end. One thing is to avoid eating anything after about 6 o'clock at night and make dinner your smallest and blandest meal. This will help prevent heartburn at night when you were laying down in bed. Other things is to avoid a lot of things with tomato seeds in them because that can really make heartburn worse. Also 5 small meals a day works a lot better than 3 big meals a day on your stomach when it comes to heartburn. Another tip is try not to drink too much water before bed because water will make the anything in your stomach including the acid rise up into your throat if you lay down.

I'll be 34 weeks this week and so far have only had one or two really bad night this time around compared to my first pregnancy. Yes I am back to eating cereal or oatmeal every night before bed, as well as taking my pepcid every night and eating usually before 5:30, but it's been night and day difference compared to the last pregnancy.

Again don't be afraid to talk to your doctor and I could give you a better idea on an over the counter when they prefer you personally to have. But yes there are some available so go and ask and it'll make a world of difference. Hope you feel better soon.
  • As far as cost is concerned for the over-the-counter brands, no they are not that expensive and in fact there are store brand equivalent that are generic for the prescription. I think I bought a 100 tab bottle of pepcid and it cost me about five or six dollars. With as bad and my heartburn was the first time around I literally would have probably spent $50 if I had to lol. Since my heartburn is the worst at night and sleep is going to be such a precious commodity I want to get as much as I can before baby to gets here.
  • Thanks so much all this really helps
  • I will say everyone has a different way to sleep when you have GERD during pregnancy. I only get sick when sleeping on my side, especially my left. I have to sleep almost sitting up propped up on many pillows. I also find taking a little warm bath when you have symptoms and sitting in the bath for a bit helps you to relax.
  • I ate sUper light yesterday and I still stayed up all night throwing up acid stuff and everything I ate that day which was like a bowl of honey bunches with low fat milk and a banana and a small amount of chicken and white rice and a grilled chicken sandwich and threw up everything
  • I feel so weak
  • Then you need to call you Dr and also keep hydrated
  • I am in my 3rd trimester and that is when the heartburn kicked in. I barely had any morning sickness, heartburn, or nausea the first 28-30ish weeks but now I get really bad burning acid in my throat. Mostly late at night but sometimes in the early evening. I found that things that help is eating smaller portions meals, especially at night to give it time to digest before going to bed (I don't even get home and eat until 9-9:30pm) and also drinking some milk or eating yogurt after the meal.
Actually I wound up eating a cup of yogurt a couple hours before bed last night and had no heart burn at all! That was after eating a pulled pork sandwich and ranch style beans!
I have not had take an antacide yet, but we shall see how long the milk and yogurt works for as this little guy gets bigger.

You need to talk to your doctor ASAP. Odds are you will need help keeping food down. Towards the end the baby is pushing up your internal organs (including the stomach) . For some women this means they literally have no room for solid foods. You may try to go slowly with things like broth (not acidic, like chicken broth) and steamed veggies that are blended kind of like a smoothie. A friend of mine did baby food pouches throughout the day when she had this issue. Every 2 hours she had a pouch and was able to keep it down. So, I would suggest talking to your doctor and starting a little more slowly.
