Anatomy scan measurement question

I had my anatomy scan this week when I was 19w2d.  Baby measured at least 19w3d in all measurements (some larger), but tech commented on how he had a big tummy.  When I asked it this was a problem, tech said no, she thought it was cute (as a note, high risk dr. who performed my NT scan also commented on his "cute" tummy and then told me everything looked great then).  The AC (abdomen) measured at 20w5d.  I asked my dr. about it and she showed me his percentages which ranged from upper 60's, a couple in the low/mid 70's and then his AC measurement at 88%.  She told me that based on the percentages and that they were all "close" there was no concern and everything looks good.  While I want to be happy that everything looks great, the AC measurement is bugging me.

Has anyone else had this type of discrepancy in measurements?  I have no idea if I had this with my other children, but do know I am much more aware at ultrasounds, etc now than I was then.  I'd love to hear anyone's experiences.

Thanks so much.

Re: Anatomy scan measurement question

  • I'm sure if there was a problem they would tell you about it. Measurements are so varying at this stage that 'normal' has a huge range. At my anatomy scan at 20w, the head and belly measured about 20w5d but the leg measured at 21w3d and they said everything is completely normal. Trust in your doctor, they would never lie to you about something serious.

  • Normal. My AS was on 20w0d. I'm certain of my ovulation date because I was temping. His average was 20w6d. His femur was 21w5d. His head was in the 97%. But his head/abdomen ratio was normal. He's a big boy.

My first baby weighed 9#5oz at birth and his head was 99%.

I make big babies. There's a huge variation of 'normal'. I wouldn't be concerned at all if I were you.
  • Totally normal! My doctor showed me a sheet that listed what the range of normalcy was for different measurements of the baby's body. For some parts it was a range of 1 week or less, but for a couple it was 1 weeks 5 days, 1 week 3 days, etc. My baby's overall measurement at 17w3d was 18w2d, but his femurs were 20w3d and one of the head measurements was 20w5d, whereas his ankle bones and a couple others were closer to 17w5d or so. Just like adults, babies all have different body types and proportions and everything, and as long as the size of any one part does not throw a red flag (meaning a vital organ or part that is far above or below the acceptable range) then it is just chalked up to the natural variations and differences in growth rates!
