Formula Recommendations

I plan to breast feed for as long as possible but am afraid that it won't be feasible with my work schedule and job. If it does not work out when I go back to work, I want to
have formula on hand just in case. I am looking for suggestions and recommendations on formula so I can make an informed decision. I'm assuming it might be end up depending on the baby for some instances but would still like to hear what others have tried and used.

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Formula Recommendations

  • I just received a gerber supplementing formula sample in the mail and my friend just told me about it and how gentle it was for her daughter when she was still trying to breastfeed

  • I used similac advanced. That's what they gave us for dd before milk came in at hospital. I did a combo of bf (5months)and formula pretty much from day 1 without a hitch. Initially I loved the 2oz bottles in between bfing if we were out and about. Then when she was bigger I used the To go packs.
  • I'd try a variety of formulas to see what baby likes/tolerates best. I think most of the major brands have supplementing formulas, but what my son preferred was Gerber Goodstart.

I'd see if you can get some samples from Similac, Enfamil and Gerber so you can try them out without spending $20-30 on a can of formula you may not even need. By the time you go back to work, you should be able to figure out what works best for you and baby.

Also, don't forget about building a freezer stash of pumped milk if you want to continue providing breastmilk but can't keep up a regular pumping and feeding schedule. You may be able to continue BF some, too when you're off work. What I did when DS was nursing was pump when I could, nurse at home, and give formula to make up the rest. GL!

  • Thank you ladies!! The problem I have with my work is how inconsistent the work hours are. Some days I might be gone a few hours and same days it might be a day and a half. I go to a different dairy farm each day and collect milk samples from the cows and we are working for about 8-10 hours straight without a break. My plan is to try to somehow pump before and after and see what happens! Just want to be prepared with some formula on hand if it doesn't work like I want it to. Thanks again!
  • Can you possibly pump in your car sometimes? I got a car adapter for my pump and a hands-free pumping bra and used my nursing cover for privacy. I pumped on the way to or from work sometimes since pumping AT work was often a challenge.

  • After 6 months the only formula my son took to was goodstart by nestle !
  • @MamaOwl15 that is definitely something I need to look into. Also some sort of cooler to keep the milk cold in as well. Thanks for that idea!

Medela and Ameda both sell a variety of accessories for pumps (most available at BRU), including car adapters and kits with bottles, a little cooler and a contoured ice pack.

  • I've never been able to breast feed and have used Nestle Good Start for both my boys. That is also what I'll use this time.
  • I had to supplement with formula from early on because my milk supply was always an issue and my son was really tiny so he needed some extra nutrition. He also had a really sensitive stomach and many types of formula upset his belly. We ended up using and really liking the Good Earth No Fuss formula (in the purple container). They sell it at Target. It's pretty reasonably priced and I'd highly recommend it.
  • FTM here, but I picked up a small tub of the Target brand that's similar to regular infant Enfamil. Will give it a try and if baby doesn't like it, then look for something different. We'll be FF from the beginning though.
  • It seems like a lot of people are suggesting Gerber. I will definitely look into that one. Thank you all so much!

It's a good brand. I've never had any issues with it, my son started it at 6 months and loved it. My friend has her little fella on it, but she had him on the stuff with omega 3&6 and it was constipating him so she switched to the regular cheap good start and all problems were solved !
  • All formula is highly regulated so you can't really go wrong. We used the Target version of enfamil gentlease, and later on the Costco brand of regular formula, both powder. I liked the powder because it was so portable. I'd pre-measure bottles with the powder (or bring a small Tupperware container) and have a water bottle for the two of us to share, or just find a water fountain or sink somewhere.
  • We use Earth's Best organic. It's more expensive, but personal preference and what works for us. We use the sensitive one (purple can)
  • We tried Gerber and unfortunately had horrible luck with our son. Constant spit up and upset tummy for about a week. We ended up switching to Similac Sensitive in the orange container. He stayed on that the entire time and didn't spit up once or have any tummy problems. Each baby is so different, I definitely would suggest trying small containers of formula or travel pouches to begin with. We bought a big can of the Gerber and ended up giving it to a friend after the week was up :/
