Possible Club Foot Diagnosis

So I had my A/S yesterday. Everything was going AMAZING. Until our tech left and came back with two doctors, which is never a good thing. They were saying how his feet looked weird, but that it's always hard to tell in an ultrasound because the baby could be positioned weird, or he probably just had his feet squished in a corner. So they're having me back in 2 weeks so they can check again when he's bigger.

I KNOW that there are worse things in life than club feet, as it is easily fixable. And also that it might just be that he was in a weird position. But I am freaking out. How can I just sit here for two weeks, not knowing? I know there's nothing I can do about it until he is born. It's just stressful.

I'm sorry if this has previously been posted.

Re: Possible Club Foot Diagnosis

  • Tom Petty says "the waiting is the hardest part."  I find that to be oh so true.  It's not that we can't deal with whatever comes, it's the NOT KNOWING that makes us anxious.  Once you know, you muster up the strength to deal.  Hoping the next two weeks fly by for you, and everything is just fine!

  • Sorry to hear about the possible club foot. :-/ Try to find something fun to do or plan for baby while you're waiting the two weeks. A craft project or something to get your mind off of it. Praying for a good diagnosis!

  • Thank you ladies for the kind responses.
  • Best of luck on Thursday! I hope they find answers to all the questions.
  • I know exactly how you are feeling. I had my a/s and everything was going perfect until she brought in 2 doctors. Same as you, I immediately felt like something bad was about it happen. I received bad news too and have to go back in 2 weeks but all we can do is pray and wait. Please keep us updated and I hope everything goes well for your little one.

  • I'm so glad that they are not making you wait, and are getting you in sooner. Please keep us posted, and I hope everything goes well for you.
  • I hope that you get good news and your baby has normal feet. Give yourself time to breathe and let the news sink in. Hopefully it is just a case of u/s are hard to read because the baby is always moving and currently our babies are still quite small (supposedly the size of a banana), so just imagine how small their feet are!

In case you do get the diagnosis of club foot, I also want to tell you about my cousin in India who is now in his 20s. He had bilateral club foot. Even back then (late 80's) they were able to progressively release the tissue and with special shoes, surgeries (not sure how many he needed) and therapy he is now walking and running without any assistance and as normally as anyone.

I think the technology now is more advanced.

It's not a permanent disability, even though it is a rough path to normalcy. Praying for peace of mind for you!
  • My uncle was born with a club foot in the 50s! I don't know exactly what treatment he had but ever since I've been born he hasn't had any issues.

  • My DH and I were just dealing with something very similar to this.  We went in for an ultrasound and the tech had some difficulty looking at baby boy's face (his hands were in the way a lot), but no one said anything until my appointment a week later where the my OB asked if the ultrasound people had called me. They hadn't, and he said they think they had seen a shadow on his lip, indicating a cleft lip and/or pallet. I was given the option of having our local hospital do a repeat ultrasound on the same equipment, or going to the closest larger city where they have better equipment and are more equipped to handle high risk (e.i. better training, better machines, more time). We opted to have the re-scan in the larger city. The closest appointment I could get was 2 weeks away. Being the informed creature that I like to be, I googled cleft lip and pallet. DON'T DO IT. Freaked myself out and spent the last 2 weeks desperately trying to do anything but think of what I saw online. I crafted, I dealt with my toddler, I visited with a friend who was in town, I did whatever I could think of.

My advice is DO NOT GOOGLE. And even if you don't, try to distract yourself with things that either take all your brain power or that you really enjoy. It will be ok.

  • I had the exact response at my 20 week ultrasound with my last baby, only they said I would find out at birth and didn't order another ultrasound. Lucky you get to find out in 2 weeks. For us, it did end up being that she was just positioned weird. Born with normal feet :) don't worry
