When your water breaks will you

Hello ladies! I'm a ftm and wondering when my water breaks if I will have time to shower ( and possibly shave) or do I grab my bags and rush to the hospital?! Will I be in pain?! Not really sure...Trying to mentally prepare myself although I know that's not possible! Any idea?! Thanks!

Re: When your water breaks will you

  • There are so many possible scenarios! I was told during appointments that statistically my water would break after I was already at the hospital either on my own or they would end up breaking it. Totally not how it happened for me the first time. My water broke and I never started contracting on my own - so I did have time for a shower before heading in.

  • My mom and my sister's water broke before contractions so they both had time for a shower. Not sure if it works out like that every time, though.
  • During our birthing class they said if your water breaks to be at the hospital within two hours. If contractions don't start on their own after your water breaks, you'll need intervention. If they do start, you just need to be monitored.
  • My water broke, and within 20 minutes my contractions were two minutes apart and extremely painful. I had a hard time walking. I will say though that I was having contractions all day but not consistent or painful until my water broke. One never knows!
  • I was told that if your water breaks your not suppose to take a bath or shower since it can invite infection and that's why you should go to the hospital soon after
  • The only real risk is if the baby isn't already engaged (head on cervix). So ask your provider about that and their protocol. Your amniotic fluid is not a finite resource and as long as you limit cervical checks and don't bathe infection isn't likely for a long time. My water has never broken prior to labor, thank gawd.
  • My water broke at 3 am, my contractions started 5 mins later , I tested positive for GBS so I went to the hospital and they admitted and kept me until after the birth of my son.
  • My water broke at 11:15pm, contractions started 2 minutes later, and DD was born at 2:30am.  I had to wait for my husband to get home from work (nearly an hour), and then a 40 minute drive to the hospital.  I was in hard labor the whole time, and as soon as I got to the hospital, I started pushing.  So in my case, I theoretically could have showered while waiting for my husband, but the contractions were so strong and close together that all I could/wanted to do was pace our house.
  • I had a slow, barely-there leak all day before going to the hospital. I thought it was just a little pee or discharge.  Had to be induced because I had gone about 24 hours and it's risk for infection.  I was induced because contractions or labor didn't start.  I felt normal.

  • My understandings is that there are so many variations on how labor can start, contractions then water breaking, water breaking then contractions, water partly breaking etc. I would love to be able to take a shower before going to the hospital but since there is no way to predict how things start, I'm just going to roll with it and see how I feel.
  • My water broke with our first and my doctor said to head straight to the hospital because of the risk of a bacterial infection. I say it's best not to wait around if it breaks.

  • My contractions started at 2:30am, I went to the hospital at 11pm (20+ hours later), my water broke at midnight and baby was born at 8:30am. Plenty of time for a shower before I went to the hospital. Still plenty of time after I got the the hospital but the contractions were excruciating and very very close together once my water broke so I would not have been able to stand in the shower at that point.
  • I did... from the time my water broke to my sons actual debut was a full 24 hours. To break it down further, my water broke while I was out shopping, I drove home (20 minutes), got hubby and he drove to the hospital 25-30 minutes and once there it took me an hour to get all of my paperwork filled out. So even with that shorter timeline I had almost 2 hours before I was in L&D. I wasn't in pain and my contractions were inconsistent and unproductive so I totally had time but everyone refused to let me bc they were all nervous (I totally get why). It def depends on where you are in the process - my water broke first so I probably could've, even when I got to the hospital. If you are having contractions and then it breaks probably not.

With first pregnancy, my water broke at 5am at home and didn't start contracting on my own and had to be put on pitocin by 11am. I called when my water broke and got to the hospital at 5:30am. Kinda wished I would have showered beforehand. Didn't have DD until 12:45am.

I think they just don't want you bathing after your water breaks because sitting in the bath can pass bacteria.
  • One thing to keep in mind is that warm water can stall or slow down labor, so if you shower I would suggest room temp water (just not really hot).

I plan to wait to go to the hospital as long as possible, so I feel like if I am able I will shower and try to get through contractions relaxing at home (as relaxing as possible...) before going in.

  • My water broke with my first around 4:30 AM.. I showered, shaved and packed after it broke.  We left for the hospital around 6 in the morning and any contraction I had were mild and not consistent.  My doctor was on call until 5:30 PM and gave my pitocin to try and kick labor into gear.
  • I'm going to call my dr and probably head right to the hospital! Def eat something first though...something delicious since who knows when I'll eat again!
  • In my Bradley Method birthing class the instructor said that you don't necessarily have to rush to the hospital once your water breaks. She recommends heading to the hospital when contractions are 3 minutes apart lasting for 1 minute for an hour, that way you can labor at home comfortably.
  • am&n: I just accidentally hit "report" as I scrolled. Sorry! Not actually reporting you! My big fat thumb strikes again.

This is me! I'm on my 4th pregnancy & my water has never broken on its own. Now I'm scared after reading all the water breaking stories LOL!
  • My water broke at 5 am one morning and then I had exactly one contraction and went back to sleep while DH went on a cvs run for pads. We built the baby's ikea dresser that day. Then, sometime that afternoon, we went to the hospital because of the infection risk. I know it's unusual to have that happen though. This time il have a whole kit of stuff ready in case it happens at work.

I thought you weren't supposed to eat? You might want to check with your dr bc I'm pretty sure there's a risk of aspiration if you were to need anesthesia. I also have heard most women throw up if they've eaten recently.

edit to add: I ideally would like to labor at home as long as possible. Depending on when I washed my hair last, I will probably shower during that time.

The risk of that is low. My birthing center actually does let us eat whatever we want while in labor so I'm hoping to bring some snacks with me to the hospital. Not sure if I will be able to stomach a whole meal but we will see.

  • Honestly it depends. With my first my water broke at 2am, got to the hospital at 3am....and I was already 9.5cm and having contractions every minute. That was craziness. With my second I was induced and had her about 4 hours after they broke my water.
  • If my water breaks when I'm not already at the hospital I'll phone my OB or their after hours service, depending. Every pregnancy is different so they'll recommend different things to different people. Most of my issues through pregnancy have not been physical so my doc will have me try and wait a while if I can so that I can prepare myself and eat something. My OB also is in affiliation with the hospital I'm delivering at so they will be the ones to contact them and let them know to be expecting me which is awesome. Talk it through with them at your next appointment, it was really nice feeling like I had more of an awareness of the situation after doing so.
  • I would REALLY recommend talking to your doctor about this. Everyone's pre-natal history is different, so what your doctor may want/need you to do may be different from other moms. It's great to get to hear everyone else's experiences, but don't rely on what others are doing as the safest option for you and your baby.
  • Thanks for all your advice and sharing your stories ladies! I actually got admitted today due to high blood pressure I'm having twins so they are worried and want to keep a close eye on me.... Hopefully my numbers regulate and I can go home
I would love them to cook for another couple weeks!!! But whatever is the safestfor them! Best of luck to all of you!!!
