When to get a breast pump

*sorry if this has already been a post, I'm on mobel site and didn't want to scroll through 50 threads to find it*

I'm planning on breast feeding when my son gets here, I'm hoping that he will just latch on and everything will be great! But I know that I have to have a backup plan just in case the latch method doesn't work out.

STM's when did you decide when you were going to get your breast pump? Or when you were breast feeding and your baby didn't take to just getting the milk from you, did you decide to pump and let them drink out of a bottle?

I'm due in 5 weeks and my husband and I have been throwing back and forth about when we need to get the breast pump.

Any advise would be appreciated!! Starting to get a little nervous since it's getting closer and closer!! :)

    My insurance company made me wait until baby was born. It took just a few days to arrive in the mail, which was fine because you really want to focus on establishing breast feeding with baby only for at least six weeks. Of course, if you have to go back to work sooner, you'll want to pump to establish a freezer stash.
    I did get the rx from the dr ahead of time and called local pharmacies to make sure they had it in stock.

    My insurance company lets me order it 30 days before my due date and said it can take several weeks before it comes in.

    My insurance company will let me go pick out which pump I wanted now and just send them a receipt and then they would send me a check in the mail to reimburse me.

    I ordered mine at the end of July and received it the second week in August. I was actually very surprised that my insurance allowed me to do it so early. I just wanted to go ahead and get it so it would be one less thing for me to worry about! If your insurance will allow you to order it now, I would just so you can have it on hand.

    This. I'm taking advantage of be coverage, as they can be pricey. I'm not sure how much I will use it, as I'm a SAHM, but I want to at least try. DD never EVER took a bottle. She'd rather starve. Which made it hard for me to leave her for more than a few hours, and I don't want to do that again. So I'm going to try and get DS used to a bottle.

    Same as others, my insurance company will let me order it within 30 days from my due date. I'm getting it as soon as that hits, because it's one less thing to deal with later.

    My insurance company allows the durable medical equipment company to send it to me overnight two weeks before I'm due.

    I'm a FTM, but I just got mine on Sunday. We got ours through the target breast pump program, they do all the work for you! All you have to do is give them your insurance info, pick a model and then pick it up in the store! I'm due in 6 weeks. I would order it as soon as you can.

    When I had my son, my insurance company said to call 3 weeks before my due date. As luck would have it, he came 3 weeks and 2 days early, so my pump didn't arrive till after . . .

    I'd call your insurance company and ask because it's going to depend on the company's policy. If needed, you can rent a pump from the hospital until you get yours.

    yep, depends on your insurance company. i have to wait til 30 days before my due date (tomorrow!) and get a scrip from my doctor to bring to target. you can pick one out there and walk away with it the same day. i'll be getting it tomorrow after my doctor's appointment :)

    I already got mine through my insurance and in due in 6 weeks. You should call and see when you can get it. There's no point in waiting if you don't have to. Then you can cross that off your list!

    I called my insurance company this past week. I can get my breast pump any time ( I actually already have one from my first pregnancy but its free so im taking advantage ) but I need a prescription.

    From the breastfeeding class I took the LLL consultant recommended at 4 weeks mom step away for a feeding and allow the dad to do a bottle feeding

    I didn't start pumping until maybe 3 weeks or so before I had to go back to work, so my son was at least 2 months old.  If you're going to be going back to work, you'll want to start using the pump to build up a freezer stash at least a few weeks before you head back.  If you're not going to work and plan on breastfeeding, there's no rush, but as others have said just go ahead and order one as soon as your insurance will allow so you have it just in case.

    I have Cigna and they asked me to wait until I was 28 weeks pregnant. So I already have mine.

    I may see what I can do about the Target program, that way I don't have to send the receipt to my insurance company and wait for the money back! Thanks everyone for the advice! :)

    I get the modela free from insurance. I Ordered it 3 weeks ago and it came within the week! I'm due in 6 weeks.

    Second this. I ordered mine at 28w1d, received it by 28w5d. I'm boiling parts tonight so I can finish packing my hospital bag and only have to do a hot soapy wash at the hospital. I'm 19 days out from my c-section.

    Ordering 30 days in advance is probably a good rule of thumb. Aetna emailed us a document with several approved vendors. Some sites sold one or two different models only, and others had a wide variety. Last week I spent a couple of hours reading product reviews and sifting though forum feedback. In the end it seemed like the Hygeia Enjoye and Medela PISA were the two top choices. Hygeia is a closed system (eg. can be safely passed on to another person once you are done with it) and seemed like a better option for my wife. I ordered from https://abreastpumpandmore.com and they billed Aetna for us. I opted to pay the optional $99 upgrade to get the internal rechargeable battery. Aetna said they would reimburse us so it was a no-brainer for me (assuming we do in fact get reimbursed). The entire process was simple and everything can be submitted through their website to process the order. They do have a number to call for questions, and when I did call they picked up after a couple of rings and were extremely helpful. Since my wife is due in one week they processed my order the same day. The pump should arrive tomorrow.
