Earliest gender detection ultrasound scan

edited September 2015 in 2nd Trimester
Hi !
I just have a quick question for those who have possibly had an accurate gender scan at 15 weeks. I had a 15 week scan due to some abdominal problems and my DH had asked the lady doing the U/S if it was possible to determine the sex of the baby at such an early stage of the pregnancy. She showed us the attached image and said and I quote " I'm leaning towards a boy but I'm not entirely sure" before I go crazy spending money on all boy things I was wandering if any body else has had a scan done accurately this early and I'm open to any suggestions from people who have experienced similar situations. What do you think of the scan ?

  • Your anatomy scan should be in 3-6 weeks. Wait until then to buy anything. In the early stages both kinds of genitalia look the same - penis-like. Which is why a lot of early predictions are boy. Relax. You'll know soon enough.
  • Looks like a boy to me... ;)
  • If the tech, a professional who is trained to read those scans, wasn't even sure, I would definitely hold off on buying all things blue. Your anatomy scan should be coming up in a few weeks, I would just wait until then.

This.  Wait a few more weeks before you go out shopping, as hard as it is to resist.

Also, there was a similar thread posted last week about this.  You may find it helpful.
  • I had a 13 week scan and the tech predicted girl. My very impatient husband insisted on me going to an US boutique around 17 weeks to find out the sex, they also predicted girl. I didn't buy anything until it was confirmed at the anatomy scan though. Just wait it out a few more weeks. Patience is a virtue. ;)
  • Thank you ! All I really wanted to know is if other people have had accurate 'guesses' so early in the pregnancy. I'm aware patience is a virtue however curiosity may be overwhelming me as I wasn't expecting her or my DH to bring up the gender topic as I was there for another purpose. :D
  • The nurse practitioner and one of the doctors both guessed accurately at 14 weeks but they did preface it by telling me not to go out and buy anything until after the anatomy scan. :)

And what sort of medical training to you have, to qualify you to make that statement?

  • If your anxious to buy baby stuff then do but stick with gender neutral colors for now. That's what I did :)

I've had guesses as early as 16 weeks-- they turned out to be wrong. So, I would advise just waiting.

I think it looks like a gremlin. Damn, now she is going to get her hopes up it was a gremlin!

  • Hahaha...omg..r u medically trained to make that diagnosis??? Bahaha!!
  • Thank you to the those who took the time to leave a relevant response, I now know my best option is to just wait it out
  • My doctor confirmed at 13 weeks and 4 days that is was a girl and she said she was 99% sure, 2 days later I had another scan by a tech and she also confirmed it was a little girl!!! Good luck :)
  • We had an early gender scan at 15 weeks. He was very obviously a boy and she was 100% confident in telling us that. Due to some complications, we've had two more ultrasounds, and he is still a boy. However, if they were unsure, I would be patient and wait until your anatomy scan to go crazy or make an announcement that you are having a boy. Good luck and Congrats!
  • I went to a boutique ultrasound place at 14 weeks and 5 days... She said she was 95 percent certain my baby was a boy. She was 100 percent correct ;).
