Manual breast pump?

Any moms out there who have input on whether you feel a manual breast pump is necessary? I am going to have access to two electric breast pumps so I just thought I'd keep one in my car to use if I'm out and need to pump. But I've never done this before do I'm open to opinions on the subject. Thanks!

Re: Manual breast pump?

  • It's not a bad idea to have a manual pump, but I wouldn't say it's necessary.  I did use one from time to time when it wasn't possible or practical to cart along the electric pump, but I could never get the same output using the manual pump.  For example I think I used it when we left my son with my in-laws for a few hours so we could go apple picking (I just went back to the car to pump), but I could have also taken the electric pump and used the battery pack it came with.

  • FTM but I registered for one because the other girls in my office said they found it easier at work. One of them even said she could manually pump faster then her electric one could. (not sure what kind of electric pumps she had, the manual one that she suggested was Lansinoh.). Not sure if that helps....
  • I had a manual attachment for my pump that I used occasionally, and sometimes I felt it was faster than my electric. But I'd just as soon hand-express because the manual pumps are still around $40.

If you're thinking you'll want to pump in the car, you might want to get a car adapter for your electric pump instead of investing in a manual.

  • I liked having my manual pump, and it was definitely more efficient than my electric pump. My DDs only ever nursed on one one side at a time, so I would use the manual pump on the other breast to help build a stash. I preferred the electric pump at work, and when commuting.
  • The hospital gave me a manual pump with my first.  I used it a couple times, was nicer taking that on a plane than the electric one.  For the most part, I solely used the electric pump- especially at work.  The manual took too long and could only pump one side at a time.

  • I liked my manual pump too. It was really nice to bring along in a large purse when I went out for dinner with my husband too.
  • Loved my manual. I bought another one for this time around, Medela harmony. I couldn't get my electric pump to work last time but I could pump 4-5 ounces in less than 10 minutes with my manual. I had an over supply though, but the manual pump was so much more comfortable. FWIW, the harmony is a lot cheaper on Amazon than on BRU.
