Preemie baby born at 35 weeks

As i read all the threads on here I'm curious if I should be gauging my babies progress/milestones on his actual age (8 weeks) or his adjusted age (3 weeks) does anyone have any in site on this? He seems to thriving for coming a month early!! He's almost doubled his birth weight already :) feeding good (4 oz every 3 hours) just not sure how to track milestones for him :) any advice is greatly welcome :)

Re: Preemie baby born at 35 weeks

  • Our little man was 36 weeks and we've been told he'll likely be "behind" on the milestones by those 4 weeks. He's hit some right on time (by birthdate vs. due date) and still working towards others. Which might be true even if he hadn't been early!

  • I would do it on his actual age. :) That's great that your baby is doing great! Congrats! Some babies do things earlier or later then others no matter how early or late they came. Our baby came at 37 weeks and even though it is considered term she was 3 lbs 9 oz and ended up in the NICU. She is 10 weeks now and she is smiling and cooinng a little. She qualified for early intervention so she does therapy every day but she is doing great :) we are working on her joints and hands and she is holding her head up a little bit longer now. If you are wondering about milestones, you can look at different websites and also talk to the professional and experts :) already at 8 weeks your baby is eating way more then my baby. She eats 2 1/2 oz consistently. I think that if your baby is acting the age of a 8 week year old that is great :)
  • My son was born weighing 5lbs 12 oz by the time we left the hospital he was just barely over 5 lbs and now he is almost 10 :) he is a really good eater!! Just when it comes to his eyes focusing or turning his head to the sound of our voices he doesn't do that very much and he still has really really bad startle reflex which from what I've read should be reduced by now.... those are the types of things I am curious about as far as what "age" I should gauge these things on.

  • My nephew was born 10 weeks early and they had to use his adjusted age instead of his actual age for a while. He was right on with the adjusted age. For example he started walking around 1 year 10 weeks instead of 1 year.

He was pretty early though so I'm no sure if it's the same for all preemies
  • Correct for prematurity for development until they are 2 years old.

I had a 35 wk girl and she was a little delayed in speech but motor and social skills were right on track. She caught up when she was about 18 mo for speech.
