April 2016 Moms

Those with 2 or more babies

Is it common practice to have an early (6wk) first u/s with #1 and a 10-12wk first u/s with baby #2 and on?

Re: Those with 2 or more babies

  • I never get an early ultrasound....only one at 20 weeks. I think it depends on the practice.

  • In my first two pregnancies they did not do an early u/s unless you were having unusual symptoms or were unsure if your dates. A 12 week u/s was optional.

This time around I'm high risk so I'll have one at 7 weeks to confirm viability and will probably opt for the 12 week as well.

  • I only had an early one with my second since I was still nursing and unsure of dates. Electing not to have one this time.

  • With my first I started out at a different practice. They wouldn't see me until 8 weeks. This time around my Dr would t see me until 12 weeks because I had a healthy pregnancy the first time.

I figured it was based on prior pregnancies.

  • My first ultrasound with my first three was my anatomy scans that were between 15-20wks. I only had an early ultrasound at 11weeks with my fourth pregnancy because of bleeding. I think it just depends on your ob.
  • It depends on your situation. With my first 3, I went in after 12 weeks. With my next 3, I was about 8 weeks. And with my last, I was 6 wks because of a previous loss. My dr wants to see me this time as soon as my numbers are high enough. 1, because of losses, and 2, because I had a blood clot with my last and he wants me to start my shots, as long as things are progressing.
  • I am with the same doctor this pregnancy as I was with my first. My first u/s was at 6 weeks, I go again tomorrow and I will see him again at 10 weeks and 12 weeks. He likes to see his patients every 2 weeks for the first tri because that is when miscarriage is most likely. In the 2nd tri, the appointments become more sporadic. Last time I saw a high risk specialist as well because I had placenta previa so between the two doctors I still went fairly often.

  • My OB's standard practice is first appt around 8 weeks with an ultrasound regardless of previous pregnancies/kids.

  • My first I had an us at 7w and anatomy scan at 20w. With my second I had to see an RE so I had us at 5w, 7w, 9w, and an NT scan at 12w. Then he was stubborn and so we had to have two anatomy scans at 22 and 23w. Then he was breech so again at 36w and 37w.
This time I have an appt for 9w and will have an us then. They like to do it at 8w but dh will be out of town that week.
  • It really just depends on practice.  I've had three different ob's, and two midwives.  Only one of those providers has offered me any kind of ultrasound before the nuchal scan at 12 weeks, even with a history that includes nine miscarriages.  I'll be seeing him next week, and taking him up on his offer of a viability scan.
