Help with gestational diabetes please!!

i have just started testing (4 days so far) and ALL my FBS are high?? I have tried no bedtime snack and eating what they suggest for a bedtime snack and can't seem to get it under 95. (103, 97, 101, 105) any suggestions??? Will try anything to avoid meds!! All my other numbers are perfect. So frustrated...

Re: Help with gestational diabetes please!!

  • What did they tell you the wanted your FBS to be because those numbers are not high.  Counting carbs is the most effective way to manage blood sugars.  The doctor and/or a nutritionist should have discussed all of this with you.

  • Try some Greek yogurt with a bit of granola. That's gotten my fasting numbers way down. It won't work for anyone but it's worth a shot!
  • Sounds crazy but the earlier I get up the better my fasting number is because your body start to produce insulin when your sugar drops after not eating for a long period of time. Or I take my bedtime number and then eat a snack. (Not sure if that is allowed by your doctor or not but it keeps me level)
  • There is a very long and comprehensive thread all about this already. It is 3 pages back (I can't link as I am on mobile) and has a lot of helpful suggestions. There is also a big thread on the September board as well.
  • Getting in the swing of things is hard!  I just started myself and had a high fasting blood glucose of 97 (max I was told it should be is 90).  I had breakfast (larger half of a whole wheat English muffin, one hard boiled egg, 1 tomato and half a bell pepper) and scored a 116 one hour after (max is 140).  Am I eating too little for breakfast?  Any snack or meal suggestions? Best of luck everyone and thank you in advance for your support and guidance.

  • Have you tried a walking in the evening? I notice my numbers are lower if I am more active. Good Luck.
  • @babyhall Check out this link below.  There quite a few of us struggling with the fasting numbers.  You might find some tips here!

  • My fasting numbers were too high (cutoff was 90 and mine are between 91 and 109), but mealtime numbers I can control wirh diet. My doctor put me on 2.5 mg of glyburide at bedtime and now my FBS is in the 70s, AND I can now have 1/3 cup gluten-free granola with breakfast!

I know you'd like to avoid meds, but it's not so bad. But check out the other thread for some ideas and see if you can control your FBS with diet. good luck!

  • Thanks so much to everyone! Posts and links were very helpful. I have started walking at night after a very low carb dinner and that seems to be working so far. I'm not opposed to meds themselves, but a bit anxious about an early delivery due to being on meds. I know it's out of my control, but I still can't help worrying about it! Thanks again to all!!
  • Fasting numbers are the only high ones for me too!! I could not get them under 95 no matter what I tried. But meals are perfect. Started insulin last night and still got a 106! So confused.
  • Every night at 9:30 pm I have a 1/2 cup of plain vanilla ice cream (15carbs) with 16 pistachios. My fish at 7 am is usually 76.

  • Yep, having the same problem.  Definitely better if I have a snack before bed, but even then my FBS can be great one morning, high the next.  my dietician and OB both have suggesting adding in walks, but are not terribly concerned with the higher numbers, although they want me to get it under control because it only goes up from here.

It's your hormones.... try a few different things and see what works.  I find that if I have a snack of yogurt with nuts or a bit of cheese with some almonds before bed, my numbers are a little better.

Good luck!  I'm in the same boat!!!
  • I was having a hard time with my fasting numbers as well. I eventually had to go on meds at night and that helped but it is slowly creeping up again. One thing that a nurse recommended was when having a night time snack (which I have to do now with the meds) is to eat the protein first and then the carbs. So I usually eat a cheese stick and then crackers. It's not as satisfying but it did seem to help for some reason.
  • I have same problem.. Doc said there is nothing I can do because I am eating perfect, exercising and all other numbers are spot on. I tried eating a hard boiled egg with a tbsp of vinegar right before bed, (I read vinegar is a natural remedy)and it worked for a few days, but then the numbers creeped up over 90 again. It's the nighttime hormone release that you have no control over (and you can't exercise away since you are sleeping and it isn't based on what you are eating). I am starting glyburide tonight. I only have to take it for night time since the rest of the day is diet and exercise controlled.
  • What helped my high fasting numbers are drinking more water, having a snack 2 hours before bed. Also, I have to avoid fruits at night. I tend to have yogurt as my evening snack. I have to avoid milk, fruit and yogurt in the morning because it spikes my numbers.

  • I actually have had a low FBS since I started testing about a month ago (usually about 75-80). The dietician that I met with gave me an extremely helpful tip. For every 30g or carbs you eat, you should be eating 15g of protein. I haven't had my numbers get above 120 during the day and I eat whenever I get hungry. I eat small portions extremely frequently, though. A handful of almonds, peanut butter and whole wheat toast, cottage cheese, etc. Everyone's body processes sugar in different ways and for one woman pizza will trigger high numbers, where in another one it won't affect her one bit. It might take you a week or two to figure out what foods trigger high numbers, but you'll get the hang of it. Just make sure that you're putting about 2200 calories into your body and don't skip meals. If you're hungry there's normally a reason. Just eat something small and drink a big glass of water with it.
  • It's all so frustrating. The only thing I have found that spikes my sugars every time is syrup. Everything else is hit and miss though I have only had 2 over 150. I've gone to bed with lower blood sugar than the fasting with both a snack or nothing at all. I can't figure it out. Steak, potatoes, fruit, corn, 1 Shirley temple, a cupcake and some mints at a wedding last night I was prepared for a high number and got 103. A wheat English muffin with peanut butter for breakfast and get a 112. Who the hell knows how that happens?!
  • Same here. I have noticed that when I don't get 7 to 8hrs of sleep my fasting numbers are lower than when I get 5 to 6hrs. And stress is a major factor with food too. I can have a meal at home on my days off with little exercise and hit the numbers right on point. If I have the same meal at work and do the 10mins walk after it, it is no help. I'm over by 2 or 5 on average.
It is a hit or miss. I have stayed away from fruit as a precaution but I miss it, oh and milk.

  • Has anyone been given insulin?  I cant control my levels with diet, the hospital picked this up late at 34 weeks I'm now 35 +3 and waiting to hear what I should do. I am scared that its to late to get the levels down without affecting the baby, at this stage they are suggesting delivery any time from 38 weeks depending on baby size, I have a scan next week to confirm baby size.

It doesn't help that every time I go to the hospital (which is frequently) someone tells me something different, frustrating and worrying at the same time :-(
  • I'm on insulin and my dose has been upped from 10 to now 40 cc and I'm STILL not controlling it. My fasting sugars have never been normal. I have an ultrasound this week because he's measuring big. I'll probably deliver at 38 weeks too. They caught mine early (24 weeks) but it's taken 6 weeks to even get this much help.

Good luck. Insulin isn't that bad. The needle is very thin and it's actually way more painful to prick your finger to test your sugars.
  • Hi @beanie1977

Thanks so much for the reply and for the reassurance it seems like 38 weeks is ok from the research and less stressful for mum and baby.

Good luck with your ultra sound keep us posted not long left now mama's thank god and we can hopefully just enjoy our bundles rather than a million hospital visits xx
  • @Imangan I am on metformin for now to help with my number but honestly they are starting to creep back up already and it hasn't even been a week. I have another appointment tomorrow and I will be asking for insulin. I was told that your number will continue to creep up as your pregnancy progresses. This diet is for the birds. If I eat what they suggest my numbers are awful and if I limit my carbs I feel like am depriving my baby (she actually moves less). When I spoke to my OB about everything the endocrinologist has said she also mentioned she would like me to make it to 38 weeks but after that we will decide on the best course of action. I am trusting my OB to make the right decision for both the baby's and my health.
  • @LLynde5  Are they making you check your ketones every morning to make sure you are eating enough carbs?

No, not yet...I am super frustrated... I am from PA and currently in WV for work. I am having my baby in WV and am totally fine with my OB but I do not care for my endocrinologist at all. I don't think I am getting the best care down here. I spoke with a friend who is a nurse practitioner at an endocrinology office back home and spoke with the doctor in her office too. They would have given me a complete different course. He also asked about my ketones which my doctor said were fine three weeks ago but everything/anything could change. Three weeks ago my numbers where fine on the WV scale but the PA doctor wasn't trilled with them:( I may asked to be switched to a Pittsburgh office or sent up to Magee's Women's hospital.
