Anyone with tailbone/coccyx pain?

I'm 9 wks 1 day and it just started yesterday out of no where, without injury. It's very painful with changes of position from sitting to standing, etc. I read that if it happens early in pregnancy first trimester it could be due to hormone changes. But I was wondering how common it is with everyone else...

Re: Anyone with tailbone/coccyx pain?

  • Sciatic pain, loosening of your hips and other joints in the area, and extra weight can all cause that pain. I've had it all since pretty early on and at 10w5d it's hard to walk by the end of the day. I've used heating pads and Tylenol when it gets too bad. :)

  • I've been getting it but I was diagnosed my freshman year of high school with a cyst on my tailbone so I wonder if it's that acting up again
  • My tailbone has been acting up the past few weeks also....but I did fall down our steps almost 2 years ago and broke my tailbone so I just figured it was acting up for some reason
  • My tailbone has also been hurting , but i notice it shifts more to my left side and hurts so bad after my 12hr shift I start to wobble when I walk at the end. Don't know wat to do to make it better :( I try to stretch a lot but nope nada !! All I know is that I have 31 more weeks to go !!
  • Thanks for your replies!

Oh my god! Yes!!!! For a few days now! It's brutal. I can barely sit comfortably! But like you, I haven't done a thing to injure it!

Must be something related to pregnancy? Hormones perhaps? Or like one PP said, sciatic like issues... I experienced sciatic pain from weeks 13-15 with my first pregnancy and it was horrific! I guess after that my uterus shifted slightly and reduced the pain. Thank goodness!

Have nothing wise or profound to say about the tail bone, just that I'm in the same boat! ;)
  • You may want to have it checked out. I had an infected cyst on my tailbone I had to have lanced.... Twice. It resurfaces at times when my immune system isn't at its highest. If it is excruciating pain when pushed on and warm to touch, don't put it off!
  • Is anybody dealing with this now and have good suggestions? I'm curious if a massage or a chiropractor would be more beneficial. Can't afford to do both. Id prefer to only take tylenol when I absolutely have to so looking for more therapeutic suggestions.
  • Someone said to try an exercise ball. Maybe try google phyiscal therapy stretches for this? I was having it but it's mostly gone away if I sit somewhere comfy and make sure my back is supported.

  • I had it bad with my first. Lying down, warm baths, and a donut helped. Also I saw a pt after for back pain and she helped me a lot with the tailbone pain. Mine continued well after I had my daughter.
  • @Leah6120 i went to the chiropractor last wednesday for the pain in my tailbone. He adjusted my lower back and it helped tremendously with the tailbone pain, but i was also having mild sharp pains in the upper right butt cheek....well going to the chiropractor just made that pain worse. Kinda feels like a pulled muscle now. Nothing is helping! :( & i really dont want to take any tylenol for the pain, trying to stay away from the meds.
    20 more weeks.

  • I've been dealing with this since about 8 weeks along, I'm 22 weeks now. I'm an occupational therapist and luckily I work with a physical therapist who specializes in women's health. PPs are right that it's caused by hormone changes and it will only get worse. I've been doing gentle stretches given to me by the PT and have a SI belt to keep everything in place while I'm working. It's made a huge difference. My OB warned to be cautious of spinal manipulations by anyone that is not specialized bc it can cause PTL if done in correctly. Good luck!
  • :(( mine does as well but I've had a previous injury to it some years ago. As mentioned extra weight on our bodies makes us ache and pain. My knees are also hurting as well. Sciatica too. Talk to your doc about physical therapy.
  • Physical therapy all the way. Bruised my tailbone years ago and PT is the only thing that can help.
  • Is it the tailbone or the illiosacral joint?(where the two little dimples are on your back) I've been getting massages and when I sleep I have a huge mound of pillows between my knees so that my knee is level with my hip. The pillows alone have helped tremendously and my back doesn't hurt or even crack anymore when I get up.

  • It's kindof both but the worst of it is on my actual tailbone. Thanks ladies I think I'll try massage for some quick relief and then talk to my dr about some therapy. Appreciate the feedback!
  • Sciatic pain is the worst! Since I carry a lot of weight in the bust, even not pregnant, this is something that I've dealt with off and on for the last few years. Since getting pregnant, it has gotten worse. There are things you can do, though. If you have a chiropractor (that you trust) that also has a good understanding of massage as well, they can usually flush the nerve, and you'll get some relief. My husband has gotten really good at doing it, too. :)
Also, the other thing that really helps me, if your bump isn't too unwieldy, is spend a little time in the yoga pose, Downward Facing Dog. It takes some of the pressure off of that nerve. I don't do yoga, but took the suggestion of a friend who also suffers from sciatica. It really does give relief when nothing else will. I'm hoping I can still do it when my belly's really out there!
    Best of luck!
  • I asked my doctor about it because I have the same pain too. Not only could it be the shifts in there but it could also be linked to constipation. With all the pressure added on your colon, if you aren't getting rid of the poop, it's putting more pressure on your tailbone:/ I started taking murilax and I may start doubling up with coconut oil too.
  • Def NOT constipation haha.. this baby has me going 2-3 times a day. But I can see how that can easily worsen the discomfort!
  • A chiropractor can help a lot. I know it's made a big difference for my pelvic pain.
  • I just got a body ball (less than $10 at Walmart) I sit on it, bounce on it and roll my pelvis. It definitly helps with the back pains!

  • Anyone else having this pain in the 3rd trimester? I have been so sore in my tail bone for the last 2 days. I just got a preggo body pillow, so I'm hoping that sleeping with that will help somewhat. I've never been to a chiropractor so I'd rather not go that route. I've been trying some yoga positions I learned in birthing class with no luck. I'd like to try a yoga ball but I'm wondering if they make them for bigger people? Any suggestions are welcome!! Thanks!

@Knottie82382906 My tailbone has been pretty sore the last few weeks. I notice it when I go to sit down/stand up or turning over when I lay in bed. It isn't especially sore to the touch, but I read that it can happen in 3rd tri due to baby's head stretching your pelvis. I know exercise balls have a weight limit, but I can't imagine you have to be super light to use one...definitely look some up online, it should have a weight limit on the box or in the product description!

  • They have different levels of exercise balls, so I'm sure you could find one that's a bit sturdier for a little more money. I figure it's an investment for now and getting in shape later!
  • I've only just started to get this occasionally.
