Yikes! Contractions at 25 weeks!

Has this happened to anyone else? I woke up one day with what felt like severe menstrual cramping. It lasted for over 8 hrs. I called my OB and she said to come in. Got admitted to LD and it was extremely scary because they told me I was having preterm contractions and they put me on a monitor and ran a FFP on me. Thankfully, it came back negative, which is a really good sign. They also checked my cervix and it was not dilated, but maybe slightly shortened. Given the test result I got sent home and instructed to rest and hydrate like crazy. I was also told having these contractions would be my body's "new baseline". I experienced the same agonizing pain for a few more days. They also told me the pain may be due to some uterine fibroids because it was mostly on the side that the ultrasound showed I had some. Thankfully, the pain has subsided at least a little bit now. That hospital stay, although relatively short was super scary. Especially when they told me I would have to be transferred to a
bigger hospital and started on meds if the FFP had come back positive. I didnt even know you could have actual contractions at 25 weeks! So far I have had a relatively easy first pregnancy. I am low risk and have been super active throughout. Prior to all of this I had been going to the gym almost every day. I read that sometimes contractions can start early on if you have been too active and now I am worried that I brought this upon myself! Has anyone else had a similar experience? TIA

Hi! When I was 20 weeks I was admitted to L & D with contractions. I agree it is absolutely terrifying. My doctor told me to make sure I always stay as calm as possible and drink a ton of water. If you're worried about your activity level bringing them on I would definitely talk to your OB to see if he thinks you need to tone down your exercising :) I'm sorry you had to go through this hun, but I'm so glad you and LO are ok!

No advice other than what your doctor has told you, but I wanted to send you my thoughts and prayers.

Yikes! Take it easy and drink lots of water. I know it's scary. Sending you lots of prayers that everything settles down for you.

Yes, I am a big bundle of Braxton Hicks whenever I am dehydrated or walk too much.  Keep up the fluids, and lie down if you start contracting. With a shortened cervix, I would stop exercising, personally.  I went into preterm labor with my last pregnancy and ended up on strict bedrest. You don't want to go there.

Thanks so much for your comments and support ladies! I'm gonna try to take it easy from now on. No more high intensity cardio and 4 mile hikes (I don't know what I was thinking!? I just felt so great before all this happened). One more question, I have a babymoon planned in a week.
Do you think it would be too risky to go?

Check with your doctor about travel.  I wouldn't be allowed to travel with a shortening cervix, but I don't know how short yours is.  If these contractions are causing cervical change though, you may start to dilate and efface.  I'm sorry you're dealing with this.  It's no fun.

Yeah, I'm going to second PPs comment about travel. I have a long cervix but a history of incompetent cervix- I'm not supposed to travel more than an hour or two without prior approval and my doctor putting together a packet for me to take with me. I'm just staying home, that sounded like a hassle and it's been too dang hot to want to do anything.

Sounds scary - sorry this happened. I agree with PPs to check with your doctor on travel. It may also depend on how far you're going, how remote, for how long, etc. Hope everything works out.

I started having contractions around 20 weeks but didn't realize it until my specialist noticed my shortened cervix at 23 weeks! After that, she told me to go to the hospital next time I started having them, which was the next day haha. They ran all the tests, and I also got a negative FFN. I was sent home with instructions to start taking a potassium supplement, and start drinking electrolyte water and/or coconut water, all to help hydrate myself. I was also an avid gym goer and yogi, and have had to cut out all of those because they do dehydrate you and can bring along contractions! I would say take it easy on the physical activity and start chugging that water! Good luck!
