Migraine issues

Hello! I am hoping some of you might have some helpful ideas for me. I'm 14 weeks 3 days pregnant and have been having severe migraines. I suffered from them since high school and have been on every type of medicine there is (before being pregnant). Now that I am pregnant, I am very cautious and don't want to take any medicine.

I've done massage, cold compress, tons of water, sleep (the most I can with a 2.5 year old!), but yesterday they were so bad, I was curled over and actually had a panic attack.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what else can help-if you've had migraines while pregnant?

Thanks!

  • I'm so sorry! Drink a mixture of lime juice and salt. Sounds like a gross combo but if it works definitely worth a shot. I would ask a Dr before trying because of the sodium intake but it's a weird trick my husband uses that helps his migraines. He too has try every medication/home treatment and that's about all that helps when he gets one. Hope you get some relief!

  • I asked my doctor about what I can do just yesterday because I've had 3 migraines in the last month (don't usually get them that close together), and his only suggestion was tylenol and something with a lot of caffeine (more than a soda) such as a latte or espresso drink.

  • I'm 15 weeks pregnant and have had extreme migraines as well...mine I actually throw up with.  The last one I had I threw up 30 times and almost went to the hospital.  From now on, when I even feel a tinge of a headache coming on, I start taking tylenol.  If that doesn't work, in an hour, I'll take Floricet which my doctor prescribed...it's a Class C medication made up of Tylenol, caffeine, and a small amount of codeine.  To me it's worth taking because throwing up and having a migraine for 10 hours is just not an option.  I am pregnant with triplets too!!!  For some reason, the only other thing that helps is ice tea and cheese doritos...guess there's something for everyone and you have to do what you have to do, but these things have worked for me.  I've had 5 migraines since finding out I was pregnant and haven't had one in 2 weeks so far (knock on wood)....praying that your migraines go away soon and that you find something that works for you!
  • My Dr. prescribed me a cream that I rub on the back of my neck.  It has a cold tingly feeling, but it does work great.

  • Thank you all for the ideas! I've been off of caffeine for almost 8 years because they are what we believe started my migraines, however my doctor did mention having a caffeinated drink to help.

I lost a baby last year at 15 weeks so I am just so nervous to take any medicine, even if my doctor told me they're safe/prescribed some.

I appreciate all the different home remedies worth trying! :)

    Thank you!
  • Definitely try some sort of caffeine.
Also, submerging your feet in hot water and a cold compress on your neck might help to draw the heavy blood pressure away from your head. Hope you start feeling better soon! Migraines are the worst.
  • I have the same problem. I feel your pain for sure! Migraines since 7th grade... Now I put peppermint or eucalyptus oil on my temples, I always sleep with a fan directly on me, cold wash cloth. I keep an ice water bowl on my bedside table at night so I can constantly keep my wash cloth cold, or I keep wet wash clothes in a gallon bag in the fridge. As soon as I feel a slight headache, I take 2 extra strength Tylenol. That has really helped. Massaging my neck with oil helps too. Good luck... I hope it subsides for you!

  • I asked my doctor about this a few days ago.  She said to take 2 extra strength Tylenol, 1 sudafed and a 1/2 serving of caffeine.  This along with a cold pack or cold cloth on the back of the neck and forehead. It hasn't completely gotten rid of them every time, but its helped me a lot more than just taking tylenol alone.
  • I was prone to headaches and migraines before pregnancy. Actually today at work I got a nasty one where my head was pounding and I felt nauseous. I am working from home the rest of the day because I felt more comfortable being at home in case I threw up or something.

I use peppermint oil, I rub it on my temple and it works like magic for me. I used it when I got home around 11am and I'm about to put it on again just for extra strength but each hour it has gotten better and I can hear myself think. Normally I use peppermint oil, eat some saltines and stay hydrated then take a nap to rest up if I can.

  • Truly appreciate all of the ideas, Ladies!! Thankfully there's no migraine today, but it is wonderful having different ideas in case this happens again. I think I'll try the peppermint oil next time for sure, and maybe a little caffeine. Thank you all!! :)

My friend recommended acupuncture. She said it's the only thing that's worked.
  • Hey ladies - I hope no one minds if I jump on this thread with a migraine question; I don't want to start my own thread, and I did look through some previously posted migraine threads and didn't see my question yet. I'm having severe, frequent, debilitating migraines that last sometimes several days. Peppermint oil, ice packs, and Tylenol sometimes take the edge off, but sometimes don't help much at all. My ob prescribed fioricet, which I've taken very sparingly but which, unfortunately, I didn't find terribly effective. I called today out of desperation to see if there was anything else he could recommend or that I could try. He said at this point in the pregnancy (15 weeks), it was okay for me to take maxalt again for migraines. It works well for me, but I'm nervous about taking it. I'm looking for opinions on this - has anyone taken maxalt or other triptans during pregnancy, and what were your experiences? Would you consider it? Thank you in advance for your responses.

I have no experience with maxalt so I'm not sure. I'd trust your doctor, or talk to a pharmacist..I know that my doctor is on the cautious side and wouldn't prescribe me anything and just told me tylenol and caffeine but if that didn't work, just go home and sleep it off. Good luck!

  • @brushesnbrunch, thanks for your input. I just wish sleeping it off worked for me! I can go to sleep with a migraine and wake up with the same headache; it's such a bummer. I'm three days in with this one - gonna hold off on the maxalt for at least one more night and pray for a little relief by tomorrow @-)
  • I've been getting headaches or a migraine every day too. A heating pad on my neck then head along with some caffeine helps a lot. My doctor recommended acupuncture as well, which I haven't tried because my insurance won't cover it, but maybe yours will! I plan on trying massage too because I feel it starting in my neck. Feel better!
  • I had the worst migraine ever while 15 weeks. For prevention my ob put me on magnesium oxide 300 mg twice daily with riboflavin (vitamin b 2) 200 mg twice daily. To break the headache I took magnesium oxide 900 mg ( may cause loose stool if you take too much) Tylenol 650 mg, Benadryl 12.5 mg and zofran 4 mg. I've been doing great since. The headache was the worst, I literally was on the couch in a ball crying while seeing floaters, it lasted 4 days ( since I was initially against taking medications) No headache since! Hallelujah !!!!
  • I feel you, I used to (before pregnancy) take Fioricet at the onset of a tension headache or migraine, both of which I am prone to, and it worked like a gem, buy my neurologist strongly advised against it when I became pregnant because it contains a barbiturate. She said Tylenol with codeine would be the alternative but I'm crazy and am hesitant to take anything--I've weened myself off caffeine so when I do feel a headache coming on, I drink some and it takes the edge off. I also went to physical therapy for awhile so I do those stretches as well...luckily mine have stopped at intense tension headaches and I haven't had a full blown migraine (yet) knock on wood!
  • Ugh, I hate that so many of us share this! Migraines run in my family history but both my mom and grandma stopped getting them when they were pregnant. Mine started in 3rd grade, so I was very hopeful to be the same way, but I got one on Friday and had to leave work. Tylenol and sleep definitely took the edge off, but I was still nauseous and had a throb all night.

I will definitely be calling my doctor next time and find the Tylenol, sudafed, caffeine combo above interesting because mine seem to be sinus related lately!
