Day care transition

I love my little one, she is so happy/sweet and we've really gotten into a great routine this summer. Well soon I go back to work and she goes to day care, and I'm nervous how she will handle the transition.

She isn't a great napper and doesn't love changes in her routine already so I am worried the transition will be tough. She is such a happy baby but if she gets overtired forget it! I am really worried how daycare will handle the first couple weeks of transitioning to a new schedule for her, I am sure she will not nap well and cry a lot when she gets overtired because of it. I am confident that she will adjust well and return to her happy self once she settles in but am worried about the first few days or weeks depending on how long it takes her to adjust.

What have others found? I'm sure I'm not the first person with this worry....how have you all dealt with it? Any good tips to help with the adjusting?

Re: Day care transition

  • Haven't transitioned to daycare yet (he will start at 3 months) but I did go back to work leaving LO in the care of my husband. It took about a week of increased crying/fussing during the day, but after that he got used to the change in routine and caregiver. For him feeding was more of a problem than napping. Once he got feeding with a bottle down, he also slept normally for my husband. But babies' sleep habits are easy to break and reform at this age, so I wouldn't worry too much. The daycare might even have some good tricks for getting her to nap that you haven't been using. After all they are professionals and they know what works with babies! I think she'll adapt and be more flexible in her habits in the long run. It's good for babies to expand their repertoire of soothing techniques that work for them, and sometimes a change in caregiver kickstarts that. If you still feel worried, maybe talk with your daycare provider and make sure they are on the same page with you about the importance of naps.

My LO went to daycare at 10 weeks and she has been there for 2 weeks now. I was definitely nervous about it at first because she did not nap in the crib and I told her teachers that. I reminded myself of why we chose this daycare and that the teachers are pros taking care of babies all day everyday. The teachers understood where I was coming from and put my mind at ease. And I think babies are a lot more adaptable than we give them credit for! Sure, the first few days were an adjustment, but now she is able to nap in the crib like a champ. Gotta hand it to the staff and honestly, the other babies, for showing her it's cool to nap in the crib!

ETA: At the center we go to, they had us fill out all kinds of paperwork talking about her behavior, schedule, etc... We did not have a daytime routine yet but the staff and teachers wanted to help. They want happy babies too of course!
