Weight gain and bloating

Im nearly 6w and I've noticed a lot of bloating. I'm a bit worried it's just plain ole garden variety weight gain but my quite loose jeans are not tight but definitely not loose.

I'm already plus sized but I've lost 22kg over the past year or so. I don't want to unhealthily gain in weight. Apparently any gain for a plus size woman in the 1st Tri isn't great.

How much bloating have you had around 5/6 weeks? Did this show up on the scales? Could any of you tell what was unhealthy weight gain, normal weight gain or bloat?

Also, any help with maintaining weight in 1st Tri would really help!

  • Omg I cried this morning because I am so bloated and I had to break out my belly band so I could unbuttoned and unzip my jeans.

I am over weight and trying to gain no more than 15 lbs. I've already gained two lbs. The bloat is killing my self esteem

I bloated a lot in weeks 4-6. I'm nearly 7 weeks now and it's calmed down (most days. Depends if I'm stuffing my mouth and also if it's really heavy food) anyway- I weighed myself the other day and I was 3 lbs less than when I weighed during week 4. Typically most of your weight gain should not be in the first trimester since you shouldn't be "eating for two" yet- just healthy. I also heard that all the extra calories you need is only an extra 300 calories per day and this usually isn't until the third trimester. I think a lot of people get caught up in thinking they need to eat double of everything and that's not really the case. Just eat healthy and clean (with the occasional guilt free treat of course!) and the weight you do gain will be only what you and baby need. :) But I wouldn't get too caught up in the number on the scale when you're really bloaty. I always weigh myself first thing in the morning after I've gone to the bathroom and not feeling bloated. That will be the most accurate. Good luck!!

Thanks all. I'm definitely not "eating for two" yet! I read early on about the 300 calories in 3rd Tri so I'm not getting carried away. Thank you for the information though - definitely important.

  • I got my good days and bad days. Unfortunately those days show up on the scale. Some doctors may recommend no weight gain at all or even weight loss if a mother is already overweight or obese. I am obese and so far I'm down 4 pounds and I plan on losing more.

  • I've gained a pound so far, I'm about 6 weeks along. Normally when I get bloated, I feel like everything swells (fingers, belly, face, even my thighs). But since I found out I'm pregnant, only my stomach pooch is really sticking out. Then again, I've been hitting the vegetables harder than I usually do (researching all the nutrients you need in pregnancy can be terrifying). That could contribute to the bloat.

Either way, i wouldn't worry. Just keep hydrated, it's good for you and the baby and overall, water moves water. Not saying it'll be a cure-all, but it has helped me considerably.

  • Don't focus on the scale. Focus on eating healthy foods and only eating when you're hungry. If you need to wear maternity pants, or use a belly band, than go for it. I totally understand about the anxiety over weight gain, I think MANY women have that... but ultimately, if you are doing all you can to be healthy, your body will do the rest and provide for what your baby needs. Also, I feel really hungry/sick during first tri so I eat a LOT throughout the day. Last time I gained 7-10 lbs first ti and was freaking out about it.... but my weight gain slowed WAY down once I started feeling better, and at the end of my pregnancy I was losing weight because I was so full/couldn't eat much. Just trust your body and don't be too hard on yourself. You're growing a human!

Agree with upping the water intake as well.

  • I've gained about 3 pounds so far, I'm 9 weeks. However, the insane bloat makes me look like I've gained 10 pounds. Its awful. My weight pre-pregnancy fluctuated 3-5 pounds anyway, and my clothes still fit. But now nothing fits comfortably, all my shirts are form fitting which makes it hard to hide my bloated stomach. I'm going shopping today for some looser shirts!
  • I am 6weeks tomorrow I have also notice bloating and gas. I haven't gain any weight. Just trying to keep on top of my water. And maintaining a healthy eating regiment.
  • Thanks everyone, I'm feeling much better knowing I'm not alone!

  • I'm 9 weeks and it seems as though my waist line is starting to become less curvy and more blockish. The scale still says I'm within my typical 3 to 5 lb water weight swing but my regular pants are now too tight and I've had to move up to my larger pre weight loss size for comfort. The bloating isn't showing or making me look larger from what I can tell but, it is very much affecting how my clothes sit and fit on my body. My boobs on the other hand....forget it buying new bras this weekend.
  • Holy smokes I feel so much better. I'm already up lbs because I went on my honeymoon before I got pregnant. I've gained 3 lbs and I'm 7 weeks. I feel so large!!!!
  • @moodystar927 - we just got back from our honeymoon in June!
