December 2015 Moms

Traveling near due date.

Hi all I'm wondering if I'm worrying more than I should. My husband is set to travel across the country 3.5 weeks before our due date. It's only for 3 days but still. This is my first so typically I've heard your first is late and my mom was late with all three but you never know, right?

Re: Traveling near due date.

  • I would be a little worried if I were you.  I do not live near friends and family though, so my husband is my only support system through this whole deal.  Is he traveling for work?  Maybe his work could make other arrangements so he can stay close to home with you.

  • If it was me, I'd ask my husband to try to make different arrangements with work. I don't have a great support system and the anxiety alone would be more than I'd want to handle.

That's exactly it. You never know. I went over and have known others that have but I've also known a lot that went early or had to be induced early. One of my cousins was induced a month early because of fetal size and honestly that always terrified me anyway.
  • I wouldn't travel that close at all. My first was right on time (actually one day before her due date). And honestly, anything can happen... babies come when they're ready or sometimes for whatever reason have to come early; you just don't know.
  • With my daughter, I didn't want my husband going anywhere within 30 days of the due date. She was a week late and I was induced, but still, we didn't know that was going to happen. He travels for work, and I didn't want him to be in CA or somewhere else in the world if I went into labor here in TX.

  • This is happening to me too. My due date is 12/28 and my hubby will be gone for 10 days 12/1-11. Scary!
  • How long of a flight/car ride away would he be if he needed to come home right away?

This actually happened to my sister. Her daughter was born about 5 weeks early (I think) and my BIL, who is a pilot, was off an a flight somewhere. It was also the middle of winter, so travel conditions weren't the greatest, but he still made it back in time for the birth.

Labour tends to be long, especially for first-time moms, so maybe talking to your doctor about how long you are likely to be in labour if it does start that early may ease your mind a little.  GL!

Not necessarily true :) With my first, we went to the hospital to be checked out around 2am. I assumed they'd tell me false labour and send me home since I was barely contracting, but no. She was born over 4 hours later at 6:45am. Very quickly.
  • I don't think I'd be too concerned but you have to do what you are comfortable with. All the FTM's I know have had babies within a week of due date or gone past, but obviously you never know. I agree that knowing how long it would take him to get home would impact my decision.

I was 2 weeks early the first time around.
  • I was 3.5 weeks early with #1 with no advanced warnings. If his work is flexible I'd try to keep him in the area or mentally prepare for the possibility he may miss the birth if he can't get home.

  • I'm in the same boat ... But my husband may need to be in the UK for the full week right before my due date... I'm not happy!
