Temping pre-TTC, low temp concerns??

Some background:

I am 25, in graduate school, have postponed TTC until next summer due to graduation date. I have always noticed my temps were a bit lower than normal but never thought anything of it until I started to learn about temping. Although I am still on birth control I started to monitor my temperatures these last few nights & days recalling my trend of running low temps.

Basal body seems to be in the 95s and during the day I don't ever seem to hit 98. Always high 96s-97s mid day. I'm beginning to worry that this might impact my ability to conceive when the time is right (seeing all the links between temp & thyroid as well as fertility & thyroid).

My only history with pregnancy was a CP in 2008, not TTC at the time. So I guess that means I ovulated at least once in my life..

I feel a little strange making a doc appt just because of my temperatures but TBH it has been on my mind quite a bit this last week.

Am I just being paranoid? In my position, would you consult your doctor?

Also wondering if anyone else reports temps this range & had no difficulty with conception.

Thanks!

Re: Temping pre-TTC, low temp concerns??

  • Hi! From what I have read, temps on hormonal BC don't really "count." I wouldn't panic until you've temped a couple of cycles OFF BC. Even then, I have no clue if temps that low are a problem, although mine are in a higher range.

I also know that for temping, daytime temps don't matter. What matters is your temp at first waking. For me this means 5:30 every morning, before I get out of bed.

I really recommend reading all the tutorials that come with the app Fertility Friend. They clarified so much for me about temping and my cycle! That said, I'm on cycle 2 post-BC and things are still evening out. We're not TTC until January so not worried yet.

  • My BB temps are 96-97, and don't rise to 98 until after I've ovulated.  But what's normal for me might not be normal for you and vice versa.  If you are concerned about your thyroid, you should talk to your PCP and see if you should get it tested.  It's a pretty easy blood test.
