Vitamin D Drops

I took my baby to the pediatrician Thursday and they gave me vitamin D drops to give him since I'm breastfeeding. Well my baby is now constipated and seems uncomfortable. The vitamin d drops are the only thing different. Has anyone else had the same experience?

Re: Vitamin D Drops

  • Yes! Same exact experience, so I stopped the vitamin d drops for now. I will discuss it with my pediatrician at our next visit in 2 weeks.

  • Here's my thought...if breast milk doesn't contain vitamin d maybe there's a reason. You vant tell me that years and years and years of making the perfect sauce has gone wrong. I'm not doing the drops. Also, it is August... I'll just take him outside for little bits of time and he can get vitamin d that way.
  • Couldn't you supplement yourself with vit d?

  • Mine is taking them since she was born and she poops every 4-5 days! I never thought it could be the cause! But sadly here is raining non-stop and I can't take her out every day and she still looks yellow after almost 3 weeks so I don't know if I should suspend them tor a couple of days! The doctor told me that BF babies sometimes don't poop as much as bottle babies and that it is normal.
  • Wow I just read about vitamin D drops in American baby magazine today
  • Our pediatrician recommended the Carlson brand, but I couldn't find it anywhere local. I picked up a natural brand that uses coconut oil and made sure that was ok with our doc. LO has no trouble pooping! I almost wondered if the vitamin D was increasing the amount of dirty diapers!
  • I only do it twice a week (if I remember)
But I was told to do it everyday.

I haven't noticed anything but I also didn't joe it could cause a problem. Next time
I give him the drops I'm going to see if anything is different
  • Our doc recommended it for the first month only while she's indoors since we live in a sunny place. He gave us the enfamil brand but it was a pain to get her to take the whole 1 ml dropper. I also didn't like all the artificial ingrediant. Ended up getting a more natural kind that has a dose of 1 drop. It's just walgreens brand.
  • My LO gets the enfamil brand drops every day and poops at least 4-5 times per day so no constipation here.
  • We put LO in the sun for 10 minutes twice a day.

I told my pediatrician that we wouldn't be supplementing with vitamin D drops.
  • LO hates the drops! I have the natural ones in coconut oil. He's not constipated but he has been super gassy and straining and crying to pass gas. He is also sleeping less because the gas wakes him up :(

  • My pediatrician also recommended the drops for my LO. I gave it to her two days in a row and both days she vomited her entire stomach that night. I stopped immediately and the vomiting stopped. I was hesitant to give it to her in the first place because I also agree that our bodies were made to feed our babies and I can't believe that my milk is lacking in anything she needs. I'm back to trusting Mother Nature.
  • I don't give the full 1mL of the D-Vi-Sol. I fill the syringe to about 8 or 9cc and give it throughout the day. It seems to help since baby can process little bits at a time rather than all at once.

We are in week 6, so the gas/poop/fussing issues are at their peak! If I miss the drops here or there I figure he's already got enough tummy issues. Also keep in mind that our breast milk didn't need to contain Vit D until all of the recent concerns about skin damage from the sun - I know my mom gave me "sun baths" and had never heard of Vit D supplements. I suppose we can just choose which consequences are better for our babies.
  • @aluapaniri do you give the whole dose at once or split it up? Directly in the mouth or mixed with breast milk?
  • I gave my son one does of the recommended vitamins and he screamed all night that night. Not sure if it was the vitamins but I'm afraid to chance it again!
  • I started enfamil vit d drops and LO started having symptoms of reflux. We started on Zantac a week later but stopped the drops. I'm thinking it was the vitamin.
Breast milk does contain Vit D but most women have "below normal" levels and that's why they want us to supplement. I didn't like all the artificial ingredients in the drops either.

Get baby d drops!! It's literally 1 tiny drop a day that you drop onto your nipple before a feeding or pacifier and it's sooooo much easier then filling a syringe of the other kind and trying to get baby to take it all. Not to mention the one that you fill the syringe is filled with artificial ingredients and sugar. Highly recommend the d drops if you haven't tried them !!
  • We have been using the Baby D drops, ( or I should say drop cause you only use 1 drop per day,) for like 2 weeks now & have had zero problems or side effects. They are the drops in the picture attached by the PP
  • @abbymessina & @ecloho where did you purchase these d drops? I don't like ordering stuff like this online...

  • So I was ever told to give our baby vit d drops at all! What happens if u don't? Our ped never mentioned it either and our LO is almost two months already. I will say though that we do go outside for walks and to just sit on the deck. For some reason when LO is fussy just going outside calms him down instantly. It's weird.
  • I think it depends on where you live if you need them. In Canada almost everyone has lower than needed levels of vitamin D (because of long winters and sun block in the summer). Both baby and I are supposed to take supplements. He takes the d-drops (1 drop a day) and I take a regular vitamin. No issues - he's gassy whether i remember to give them or not :)

Same. No problems on our end w this brand. Normal poops and we give him 1ml a day.
  • I bought the enfamil brand, but returned them & went for the one drop kind
  • Our LO loves his outside time too! We say "hello world" in the morning, and "goodnight world" in th e evening right before his bath and bedtime routine.
  • Definitely like to get my LO outside for brief exposure. We take a walk with DH & LD (little dog) every evening. My Pediatrician said keep sun exposure to a minimum for newborns because their skin is so sensitive. He said not to start using sunscreen until 6 months.

We also were never told about drops by the ped...then I thought maybe it's because we're in AZ? Or because he's half black (but doesn't everyone need Vit D?!) I'm going to ask at his 2 month check up this week. And same thing, when LO gets fussy I bring him outside and he chills way out!! Don't know if it's the heat or the trees to look at or what but it's my special calm-down maneuver!
  • @juliekay25 & @klirwin82 I live in Colorado where we have over 300 days of sunshine a year & our doctor still advised us to do the D drops.
  • I'm in North Dakota. We have limited sunshine that we can take advantage of so you'd think we'd need them. My sister had a baby last year and had diff docs at a diff hospital and never was told she had to use them. My mom never used them either. I'll really have to ask now if not just because I'm curious.

This may help clarify ehy for vitamin d. I EBF and was told that breastmilk lacks vitamin d so we will need to use the supplement.

My gf who is breastfeedind was never told to use vitamin d and her son is the same age as mine.
